PLATEN-PRESS CHASE-LOCK.

To all] whom/15 may concern 3e it known that .l, ;\RTHUR S. FOREMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at .358 St. Peter street, in the city of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Platen- Press Chase-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My in ention relates to a method of locic ing or securing chases upon the bed of platen printing presses, and the ob ects of my invention are, first, to provide for the use upon such presses of chases of smaller size than those made for use with the press; second, to provide facilities for the adjustment of the apparatus to enable chases of varying size to be used upon a single platen printing press. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
l iguro l is a view of the entire apparatus. For the purpose of more definite illustration, this view represents the apparatus as it would appear with a chase locked in it. Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of the device for locking the chase at its top.
The outer frame beveled at its lower outer corners and at its top (556) constitutes the framework of the apparatus. This frame is beveled on the inner side of its lower bar (f) in such manner as to receive and hold securely the chase to be used, by engaging the beveled edge of such chase, in the manner shown in Fig. l, Where the beveled edge of the chase is secured in the beveled mortise in the bar at An adjustable bar (0) terminating in V-shaped lugs ((17) about one-half the thickness of the bar, extends horizontally across the lower portion of the frame, and is secured by the lugs at its ends entering corresponding mortises (cc) in the frame. When the apparatus is locked on the press, the bar rests upon the press bed and the portion of the frame which extends over the mortises (cc) secures the desired amount of rigidity. This bar contains mortises of varying length and depth (go) to engage the beveled edges of the various sizes of chases to be used. then necessary to secure greater latitude of adjustment, 1 would have an additional mortise or mortises on the lower side of the bar at (7th). A locking device to secure the chase at its top is incorporated in the upper bar of the frame. I prefer to carry out this feature of my invention in the manner shown in Fig. 2, w iere it will be seen that a movable clutch operating in a mortise in the frame, moves as if at the circumference of a circle corresponding to the curvature of its longest side. The lower beveled end of this clutch is forced down upon and secures the chase by the action of a spring (is) contained in a mortise in the frame and connected with the clutch by a rod which passes through the clutch and frame in a channel of sufficient size to prevent the rod binding by reason of the rotary motion of the clutch, this rod being secured to the clutch at (Z) by a pivotal fastening. The clutch is operated to permit the insertion or removal of a chase when the apparatus is on the press, by a projection (m) accessible by a slot in the frame as shown. The movement of the clutch is restricted to the desired extent by this projection engaging the ends of the slot. ll hen necessary to secure other adjustments cf the apparatus, 1 would incorporate this locking device in a bar to be secured and adjusted across the upper portion of the frame at in the same manner in which the lower bar is secured and adjusted; that is, by means of the adjustment of its ends in a series of mortises in the frame.
As a means of securing sidewise adjustment of the chase upon the press bed, I would continue the bevcls and (gg) in the lower bar of the frame ((1 and in the adjustable ba (0) respectively, the entire width of the frame and bar, and provide against. sidcwise movement of the chase by means of two pegs or screws adjustable in a series of holes in the frame or bar in such manner as to engage the chase on either side and prevent sidewise movement.
I claim:
1. A platen press chase lock, comprising a rigid frame mortised to engage the locking device of the press, a semi-circular locking device actuated by a spiral spring, contained in the frame central of its upper side, and a lower cross bar adjustably engaged in iotches in the sides of the frame, substantially as described.
2. In a platen press chase lock, the combination of a rigid frame, mortised to engage the locking device of the press, having a series of V-shaped notches in its vertical sides, covered by approximately one-half the structure of said sides, beveled along its lower inner edge to engage the beveled edge of a platen press chase, and containing a recess central of its upper side in which is contained a semi-circular locking device actuated by a spiral spring to engage the beveled edge of a platen press chase, and a lower cross bar, beveled on its upper and lower edges to engage the beveled edge of varying sizes of platen press chases, and adjustably secured in the V-shaped notches in the vertical sides of the frame, and reversible; all substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. In a platen press chase lock, the combination of a rigid frame, lnortised to engage the locking device of the press, having a series of V-shaped notches in its vertical sides, covered by approximately one-half the structure of said sides, beveled along its lower inner edge to engage the beveled edge of a platen press chase, and containing a recess central of its upper side, in which is contained a semi-circular shaped locking device actuated by a spiral spring to engage the beveled edge of a platen press chase, and a cross bar, adjustably secured in the V-shaped notches in the sides of the frame; all substantially as described, for the pur pose specified.
