To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. PALMER, a -citizen of the United States, residing at Owosso, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Glue-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has reference to that class of devices which are employed for securely holding glued boards together at their edges to secure a perfectly tight joint and is designed as an improvement upon my former patent, dated April 11, 1893, No. 495,054, wherein are employed notched clampingbars and levers forforcing the sections composing the stock closely together.
The invention consists in a glue press or device constructed substantially as shown in l the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a'plan View of the device, showing the two boards in position in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. l, also showing a second device below it to illustrate the relative positions thereof when in use; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and on an enlarged scale.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the notched clamping-bar, which may be of any desirable width and length and of any preferred construction. This clampingbar has a suitable opening d, and to the bar over said opening is connected the horizontal plate B by means of the blocks b, so as to retain said plate the desired distance above the bar. The plate B upon its upper side is cast or otherwise provided with a tooth O, adapted to enter and engage the opening a of the clamping-arm located directly above it, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The outer end of the clamping-bar A has pivotally connected thereto an operating hand-lever D, provided with ratchet-teeth c,
5o with which engages the spring-actuated pawl d, pivotally connected to the clamping-bar, therebyholding the leveragainst turning back when being operated. Any suitable springpawl may be substituted for that shown, and in the present instance I have provided the pawl with a thumb-piece e for releasing the pawl from engagement with the ratchet-teeth.
The enlarged end of the lever is disposed between the ends of the clamping-bar A and the horizontal 'plate B, the pivotal pin f serving to connect the bar and plate together.
To the enlarged end of the lever D is eccentrically pivoted one end of a link iE, and
the opposite end of the link is pivoted to a movable clamping-jaw F of any preferred construction. In the present instance I have shown theclaniping-jaw F provided with a slotted shank G to enable the shank to slide on the clamping-bar without interfering with the blocks b and also providing said shank with guide-anges g, which extend above and below the shank and against the edges of the stationary plate B and the clamping-bar A, Y
thereby preventing the shank from lateral movement while moving lengthwise of the clamping-bar A.
The enlarged end of the hand operatinglever D may have a curved bearing it for the curved end of the eccentrically-operating link E to take the strain off the pivotal pin of said link.
In using the glue press or device a suitable frame or support, as shown in my former patent, may be employed or any other preferred construction of frame or platform for supporting the lower one of the devices, the

with a socket or opening and a holding-tooth C the several devices may be locked into each other to prevent springing and drawing of the devices, this being considered an essential feature of the invention, as it locks together the entire number of the clamping devices used and holds them in line and against lateral displacement. The eccen trically-pivoted link E provides a most perfect means of forcing the clamping-jaw forward, and the spring-actuated pawl d, which engages with the ratchet-teeth c of the handlever, holds the clamping-jaw in position against the board and prevents it from receding. In the general construction ot this clamping device there are many changes or modifications in the several details that may be made without departing from the principle of the invention, as in the clamping-bar and the clamping-jaw, the spring-actuated pawl, and the operating hand-lever, all of which may be modified or changed in form and construction Without affecting their operation.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-Y 1. A clamping device for glue-presses, consisting of a clamping-bar adapted to be coupled to and cooperating with a part of said press forming one clamp-face therefor, said bar provided with a holding-tooth on one lateral face and an opposite socket or opening so arranged that the tooth and socket of adjacent bars wi ll interlock to maintain a series of the bars in alinement, and a movable clamping-jaw and lever'for operating it, substan= tially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A clamping device for glue-presses, consisting 'of a clamping-bar adapted to coperate with others and with a base forming one clamping-jaw and having respectively a counterpart holding-tooth and a socket on opposite sides so that a series of said bars may be interengaged to maintain the series in line, and a movable clamping-jaw on said bar, an operating-lever with ratchet and a pawl adapted to engage the teeth on the ratchet, and an eccentrically-pivoted link connecting the movable clamping-jaw with the lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A clamping device for glue-presses, consisting of a clamping-bar having a series of notches near one end to engage a slotted standA ard, and a movable clamping-jaw, a lever operating it and having a curved bearing-rib, an eccentrically-pivoted link connecting the lever vwith the clamping jaw and resting against the curved rib which transmits the clamping strain, substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
4. A clamping device for glue-presses, consisting of a clamping-bar, an operating-lever havinga lateral curved bearing-rib, a movable clamping-jaw, an eccentrically-pivoted link connecting said lever with the jaw, ratchetteeth upon the inner end of the lever, and a springactuated pawl adapted to engage with the teeth, substantial] y as and for the purpose set forth.
