To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT Gnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belfast, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Board-Clamps, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in board clamps, and the object is to provide a clamp so constructed that the base may be held on the joist or rough floor, and the presser head engaged with the edge of the board to which it exerts a downward and forward pressure to bring the board into contact with the next adjoining strip.
A further object is to provide a double-acting construction for moving the presser head against the board, and a still further object is in the provision of means for holding the mechanism which moves the presser head so that when the board has once been brought to place, it will be maintained in its proper relation until secured by the permanent means.
My invention relates to still other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the device in a position on a subflooring and exerting pressure against a strip of the top flooring; Fig. 2 is a top plan view in partial section more clearly to illustrate the arrangement of the presser head; Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation taken from the forward end; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view to better show the sliding members in which the presser rack bar is mounted.
The clamp frame proper comprises a base A, which is preferably made wedge-shaped, and on the rear end thereof has spurs 1 to engage with the sub-flooring or with the joist for holding the base in position. A segmental-shaped rack 2 is secured on the upper side of the base A, and, through slide bearings 3-8, formed in the lower part of the segmental rack 2 at its point of joining with the base, a presser rack bar 4: is mounted. This rack bar is provided on its upper edges with teeth 5 and on its forward end has a presser head 6. The presser head, as better shown in Fig. 2, is made sufficiently wide that considerable bearing will be provided against the board being brought to position, and a groove 7 is provided on the Specification of Letters Patent.

adjacent strip, but also bringing it down against the sub-flooring or joist. The segmental rack 2 has a cross bar 8 provided therein to extend in a line parallel with the top of the base plate A, and this cross bar, on its lower face, is provided with rack teeth 9. A toothed wheel 10 is made of suflicient size to fit between the cross bar 8 and the presser rack bar 4, and is provided on its periphery'with teeth which fit in teeth 5 and 9 of the two bars.
The lever 11 is made bifurcated through the greater part of its length, as at 12, and this bifurcated portion is fitted over the segmental rack 2 and at its free end is secured by rivets, or in any other suitable manner, rigidly to the toothed wheel 10, as at 13. From this it will be seen that as the'hand lever 11 is swung in one direction or the other, toothed wheel 10 will travel in the teeth 5 and 9, and the presser rack bar will be forced forwardly from the base plate or withdrawn thereonto. Teeth 1414 are provided on the outer surface of the segmental rack 2. A pawl 15 is pivoted at 16 in the bifurcated portion 12 of the hand lever 11 in position to engage with the teeth 14: and spring 16 holds this pawl in its engaging position.
The operation of the device is as follows: The base plate is positioned as shown in juxtaposition to the flooring strip to be brought into place. The hand lever 11 is brought rearwardly, causing the toothed wheel 10 to travel over the cross bar 8, and the presser rack bar 4, thus moving this presser rack bar and the presser head outwardly against the board to be clamped. The pawl 15 holds the presser rack bar to its working position. WVhen it is desired to release the clamp, the pawl 15 is disengaged from the teeth 14: against the tension of the spring 16, and the hand lever 11 is moved forwardly, which withdraws the presser rack bar onto the base plate A.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. A device of the character described.

A device of the character described comprising a stationary member, a segmental-shaped rack secured to said stationary member, a movable member slidably, mounted in a bearing formed on the stationary member adjacent the segmental rack and provided with teeth on the outer side therecopies of this patent may be obtained to:

segmental rack secured on one side thereof, a movable member: mounted in asuitable bearing formed adjacent the segmental rack and having teetl'rgon its outer face, a crossbar provided in said segmental rackand on its inner face. provided with teeth, a toothed wheel received between said cross-bar and said movable member to engage with; the teeth ofeach, a hand-lever having one end thereof bifurcatedreceived over the segmental rack and secured toJsaidtoothedwheel whereby, when the hand-lever is,moved, the movable-member is fed off from'and withdrawn to the stationary member, ,said seg-j mental rack having the teeththereof on the outer surface, and a springrheldpawl mounted in the bifurcated portion of said handlever in positionv to engage with the teeth and prevent back movement of the movable member, said pawl so constructed as to be manually released to permit the back movement ofthe movable member.
