Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT E. JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
G'ALLEY.
SPECIPICATIONJorming part-of Letters Patent No. 365,308, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed October 528, 1886. Serial No. 217,453.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GILBERT E. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements inGalleys, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in galleys; and it consists in the features set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a galley containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane 3, y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a quoin, the cam being indicated in dotted outlines. Fig. 5 is a section in the plane 2 2, Fig.
' 4. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show modified forms of locking-block and side-stick.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the example shown in the drawings, the letter A indicates the side of a galley.
B indicatesthe type or matter.
0 indicates the side-stick.
V G is a quoin, which maybe provided with a side lock, D, and an end lock, E. The quoin G audits cam F are supported on a pivot, I, and the cam is provided with lugs H H, for attachment of a wrench, through which the cam, quoin, and locks D E are actuated. The side lock, D, presses against the side-stick O to lock up the matter. The end lock, E, is adapted to lock against the end of the matter. The end lock, E, is ridged or arched, so that it can pass over the side-stick O.
Heretofore it has been customary to apply two or more quoins along the side-stick O to lockup the matter, but such application of several quoins consumes time.
To avoid the application of several quoins, I have provided the galley with a lockingblock, N. The locking-block N may consist of wood, lead, or other suitable material. It is well to fasten said locking-block to the galley, so that said block N will not become detached or lost from the galley. When the type or matter has been placed in the galley and is ready to be locked up, the side-stick O is forced in between the locking-block N and the matter, so as to lock up the matter. By
(No model.)
beveling or inclining the edges or part of the edges of the block N which the side-stick 0 passes the side-stick will be readily guided into place, and a slight blow or push upon the side-stick with the hand or any suitable instrument will crowd' or force the side-stick in between the block N and the matter B, so as to lock up the matter. By this means the application of at least one quoin and the time requiredforsuchapplicationaresaved. Imay even, if desired, avoid the use of any quoin and apply two or more locking-blocks in the manner shown in the application of the block N in the drawings. In such case it will only be necessary tocrowd or force the side-stick into its proper place, whereby the matter will become locked up, the time required ,for the application of a quoin or qnoins being saved. The locking-block N may be screwed, soldered, or otherwise secured or fixed to the galley.
In order to prevent endwise or longitudinal motion of the sidestick 0, said sidestick may be attached to the locking-block N. A convenient manner of attachment is shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, where the side-stick is provided with a recess or notch, 0, adapted to engage a lug or projection, P, on the lockingblock N.
The side-stick maybe provided with notches 0 near either of its ends, so that either end of the side-stick may engage the lug P. As seen in the drawings, the form of lug P and notch O is such as to allow a ready insertion or withdrawal of the side-stick into or from the galley.
By inclining a face of the lug P, as seen in Fig. 6, the side-stick can be readily put into or taken out of engagement with the lockingblock N, while the side-stick when in engagement with the locking-block N is held against endwise or longitudinal motion. Of course the same engagement can be obtained by forming the lug P on the side-stick and the notch O in the locking-block. I
Ido not herein claim a quoin provided with a cam having a rigidly-attached handle or lugs by which to turn it; and, further, I do not herein claim a quoin provided with a stop to co-operate with a stop on a rotating cam journaled on the quoin in such manner that when the cam is turned to bring its stop into engagement with the stop on the quoin the latter, with the cam, can be introduced into or removed from the galley, as such features eonstitute the subject-matter of my application of 5 even date herewith, Serial No. 217,459.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A galley provided with a locking-block having a lug or projection, P, in combination to with a side-stick having a notch, O, substantially as described.
2. A galley provided with a locking-block,
N, fixed in a stationary position and having a beveled or inclined edge, in combination with a side-stick and a quoin, substantially as (10- [5 scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GILBERT E. JONES.
