Definitions
- a continuous casting mold has at least two mold walls that are positionable by a differential motion mechanism at an adjustable taper and distance relative to the mold center.
- the present invention relates to the constructive embodiment of a liquid cooled continuous casting mold with adjustable lateral walls in particular to a liquid cooled plate mold of rectangular cross-section with at least two conically adjustable mold walls, where the narrow sides of the mold between the broad sides of the mold are adjustable by two at the narrow sides pivotably mounted and by nuts secured screws.
- the narrow sides of such molds usually consist of integral plates.
- the broad sides may be constructed of a plurality of wall parts or, if desired, also consist of a single plate.
- T-he taper of the wide sides is normally given by the taper of the narrow sides between the wide sides and hardly changes with the dimension of the slab to be cast.
- Concerning the narrow sides depending on the width of the slab a substantial change of the taper is necessary.
- the wide sides of which consist of a plurality of wall parts and also in respect to molds the wide sides of which are formed by a single wall part, it has thus already been proposed to effect the adjustment of the inclination of these narrow sides by means of adjusting screws, mounted at the upper and lower ends together with respective adjusting nuts.
- the essential object of the present invention thus resides in disclosing a means for continuous casting molds consisting of plates which does permit the adjustment of different slab widths with the respective taper in most simple and precise manner.
- the inventive liquid cooled plate mold of rectangular cross-section with at least two conically adjustable mold walls, where the narrow sides of the mold between the wide sides of the mold are adjustable by means of two at the narrow side pivotably connected and by nuts secured screws is characterized in that the screws do have different pitch and the nuts surrounding the screws and also serving as hearing are provided with worm wheels and are in engagement with a common worm shaft. According to a further inventive embodiment for the same pitch of both screws the worm wheels may have different diameter or different pitch.
- the lower screw is provided with a smaller pitch than the upper screw.
- the worm wheel of the lower screw has a greater diameter than the worm wheel of the upper screw, or when there is provided the same diameter for the wheels, the worm wheel of the lower screw has a lower pitch of the screw threads.
- FIGURE 1 is a lateral view of the first embodiment of the adjusting means of the invention
- FIGURE 2 is a plan view on the adjusting means and a portion of the mold and the respective mold frame
- FIGURE 3 is a lateral view of the second embodiment of the invention.
- FIGURE 4 is a side elevational view of the complete mold arrangement of both embodiments.
- FIGURE 5 is a plan view thereof.
- FIGURE 1 the narrow side 1 of a slab mold is shown in two difierent positions 1, 1'.
- 1 represents the initial position, e.g., the minimum mold width, 1 the final position.
- an upper screw 2 and lower screw .3 Such screws 2, 3 are provided with a thread 4, 5- of different pitch.
- the lower screw 3 has a smaller pitch than the upper screw 2.
- the screws 2, 3 are surrounded and guided by guides 6 and 7, respectively, which do have nuts at their exterior end and are in engagement with the thread parts 4, 5 of the screws 2, 3.
- the guides 6, 7 each are provided with a worm wheel 8, 9 and the worm wheels are in engagement with a common worm shaft 10.
- the adjusting means according to FIGURE 1 is supported on the frame 11 of a plate mold.
- the broad sides 12, 13 of this plate mold are secured in manner known per se by means of bolts 14.
- the narrow side 1 which can be adjusted to different widths and respective taper.
- FIGURE 2 further shows the worm wheel 8 of the upper screw guide and the respective worm shaft 10.
- the reference numerals 15, 16 indicate the inlets and, respectively, the outlets for the cooling liquid known per se for continuous casting molds.
- FIGURE 3 illustrating the second embodiment shows screws 2, 3 provided with a thread 4, 5 of equal pitch.
- the surrounding nuts 6, 7 are each provided with a worm wheel 8 and 9, respectively, of which the worm wheel 9 of the lower screw does have a greater diameter than the worm wheel 8 of the upper screw, or the worm wheel 9 of the lower screw upon the same diameter of the wheels does have a smaller pitch of the worm threads.
- the construction is the same as disclosed in respect to the first embodiment.
- FIGURES 4 and 5 there is shown the frame of the plate mold, further the wide sides 12, 13 secured by means of bolts 14. There is shown the position of the adjustable mold walls together with the drive means according to the invention.
- a liquid cooled continuous slab casting mold comprising at least two movable mold walls positionable at adjustable taper, and a differential motion mechanism connected to each movable mold wall for positioning said mold wall at an adjustable distance from the mold center and thereby at a predetermined adjustable taper relative to the vertical.
- a liquid cooled mold as claimed in claim 1, said differential motion mechanism comprising an upper and a lower screw of different pitch, a nut in threaded engagement with each screw, a worm wheel connected to each nut, and driving means connected to said worm wheels and being operable for simultaneously driving both worm wheels.
- a liquid cooled mold as claimed in claim 1, said differential motion mechanism comprising an upper and a lower screw of the same pitch, a nut in threaded engagement with each screw, a worm wheel connected to each nut, said worm wheels having different diameters, and driving means connected to said worm wheels and operable for driving both worm wheels simultaneously.
