PAINTBRS SGRAPING DEVICE.
No. 343,389. Patented June 8, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ONEILL AND RICHARD ON EIL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAINTERS SCRAPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part: of Letters Patent No. 343,389, dated June 8. 1886.
Application filed February 18, 1886. Serial No. 192,348. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES ONEILL and RICHARD ONEIL, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Painters Scraping-Knives, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention consists, principally, of the combination, with a painters scraping-knife used for scraping walls and ceilings preparatory to repainting them, of a receptacle for catching the dbris removed by the scraper.
The invention also consists of the special construction of the receptacle, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line a w of Fig. 1;. and Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the receptacle closed.
A represents a receptacle attached to the knife or scraper B. The receptacle in this instance is composed of the bag I), of canvas or other fabric, held in an elastic or collapsible frame composed of the yielding or spring bows c, the cross-pieces d d, to which the ends of the bows c are attached, and the rods e e, that form the upper side pieces of the receptacle. The rods 6 are made fast to the plate or cross-piece d, but pass loosely through apertures f f, made near the ends of the crosspiece (2, so the rods may slide through the cross-piece d when the receptacle meets resistance in opposition to the knife B, thus adapting the receptacle to close, as indicated in Fig. 3. The cross-piece d is, by preference, made half-tubular, and it is slotted, as shown at d", for the passage through it of the screws 9 g, by which the knife and receptacle are fastened together. The slot at extends nearly the whole length of the cross-piece d, and by loosening the nuts of the screws 9 g the knife B may be moved along the cross-piece d to stand at the center or near either edge of the receptacle, and leading from the slot d are the short slots 01 into which the screws 9 g may be moved for varying the pitch of the knife B relative to the receptacle A.
The screws 9 may be applied directly to the knife B, for attaching it to the crosspiece d; but we prefer to use in connection with the screws a block or clamp, h, placed across the knife and upon the screws, as shown, so that by turning down thenuts upon the screws the clamp willhave a vise action upon the knife, and hold it and the receptacle securely together.
By the use of the device attached to the scraping-knife all of the scales and debris removed from a wall in scraping it may be caught in the receptacle and prevented from falling to the floor, and by adapting the knife to be adjusted along the bar (1 the corners of the knife may be moved along a molding, corner, or angle, and by adapting the receptacle to be opened and closed to and from the knife the receptacle will not interfere with the edge of the knife being shoved with a forward thrust entirely up to a molding or wall.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with apainters scraper, B, of a receptacle, A, for catching the debris removed by the knife, substantially as described.
2. The receptacle A, composed of the bag I) and a collapsible or spring frame for holding the fabric, and adapted to be attached to the knife B, substantially as described.
3. The receptacle A, composed of the bag I), spring-bows c, cross-pieces dd, and rods e, held loosely in the cross-piece d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The bar d, attached to one side of the receptacle and formed with the slot d and short transverse slots d substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
