DOOR 0R BELL KNOB' No. 341,442. Patented May 11, 1886.
Y knobs witharemovable name-plate, the knob l vices and combination of devices, as will be UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN BERGHAUER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR AND BELL KNB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,442, dated May 1], 1886.
Application filed August 25, 1885.
To a/ZZ whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN BERGHAUER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Bell Knobs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved door or bell knob.
The object I have in view is to provide such being thereby especially adapted for use in apartment-buildiugs where the occupants are likely to change.
The invention consists of certain novel dedescribed and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective of a knob complete; Fig. 2, a section through the same; Fig.v 3, an elevation of the name-plate, and Fig. 4 a detail of a rubber piece adapted to hold such plate in position.
Like letters refer to like parts in each view.
A represents the shank of the knob, provided with the usual squared opening, into which the stem ofthe bell or door handle is inserted, as will be readily understood, the parts being detachably keyed together. its upper or outer end shank A is formed with a flaring head, as B, which forms part of the knob proper, as will be explained. This part B is provided on its outer periphery with a vertical flange, C, which is screw-threaded on its inner face, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
To complete the knob I employ a ring, D, provided with a downward iiange, E, screwthreaded on its outer face and of a size to iit within the flange C of part B, the parts being thus securely screwed together. Ring D is provided with an inwardly-extending ange,
Serial No. H5267. (No model.)
face is painted the naine of the person occupying the apartments with which the bell or door communicates.
By my improved knob it will be seen that owners of apartment-buildings may keep on hand a supply of the plates, and when the tenants are changed it only becomes necessary to remove one plate and substitute another with the name ofthe new tenant thereon. The name of the occupant is thus placed in a prominent position, and all necessity for additional plates and signs avoided. It is when the plate Gris made of glass that it is especially desirable that the piece F should be made of some pliable material-such as rubber-as the plate is thereby given a certain play should pressure be applied, and its breakage rendered less liable.
What I claim is rIhe combination, with a door or bell knob consisting of a perforated shank enlarged at one end and a ring provided with an interior flange secured thereto, of a removable nameplate and an elastic plug inserted into the shank and abutting against the nameplate,as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iafix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN BERGHAUER.
