(Cl. 273-136) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A game board for playing chess comprising at least five separate sections, four of which have two rows of playing areas, two of these four sections forming the upper and lower parts of a checkerboard of conventional dimensions, the other two sections being positioned to receive chess pieces as they are removed from the board during the playing of a game of chess. When a new game is to be started, the last mentioned sections, with the pieces properly positioned thereon, are substituted for the upper and lower sections of the playing board, thereby eliminating the delay between games occasioned by the positioning of chess pieces.

I call my invention a ready-play chessboard: It enables the players to start another game without the delay occasioned by resetting the chess pieces on boards now in common use.

In the game of chess the players must carefully position thirty-two pieces on specific squares. During the course of an evenly matched game most of these pieces are removed in the exchanges which take place and are arranged haphazardly beside the usual board. To start another game these pieces must be located and carefully repositioned. This causes delay which is irksome to players who are impatient to continue their match. My invention minimizes this delay and therefore has received favorable acceptance when demonstrated in public.

The chessboard of my invention is shown in the drawing accompanying this application. It consists of six separate sections each having two horizontal rows of ranks, each row having the usual eight alternately colored squares as shown. Also sections 2 and 3 may be combined into one unit without departing from the novelty of its useage.

3,406,975 Patented Oct. 22, 1968 My invention is used in the following manner. Four sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 are pushed together as shown in the drawing to form the regulation play area. The remaining sections 5 and 6 serve as repositories for the pieces removed by the players during a game. There is ample time during the game to position these pieces on the squares of these sections which serve as repositories. When the game is concluded it is a simple matter to replace sections 1 and 4 with these repository sections bearing the pieces properly positioned for the start of another game. The replaced sections 1 and 4 now become the repositories on which removed pieces are positioned. This interchange of sections of my chessboard making possible the continuity of chess games with minimum delays constitutes the novelty of my invention. It will be noted that all sections with their 96 squares are used during the course of succeeding games instead of the usual 64 square board.

The sections of my chessboard may be made of many materials or combinations of materials. Mechanical features connecting the sections or conveniencing the interchange of these sections are refinements which may be added without affecting the novelty of my invention.

There are other advantages accruing to my invention which I note in the following claims:

1. A game board consisting of six structurally separate and identical sections, each section having only two rows of eight alternately colored squares per row.

2. A game board consisting of five structurally separate sections four of which are identical and each having only two rows of eight alternately colored squares per row, and the fifth section having only four rows of eight alternately colored squares per row.
