Definitions

  • a printing plate is provided with a guide rail by folding back one of its edges and a portion of the rail is, in various ways, depressed relative to the remainder of the rail to accommodate a text bearing strip.
  • the present invention relates to indexing printing plates of the type wherein guide rails are formed by the double folding of material along two longitudinal marginal edges of the plate for the purpose of guiding the plate when it is to be passed through a printing machine.
  • An object of the invention is to provide for forming one of the said guide rails as to adapt the same for the reception of one or more text bearing strips for the identification of the particular indexing printing plate.
  • one of the two double folds forming the guide rails of the plate is compressed, perpendicularly to the plane of the plate along at least part of the length of the fold, so as to provide, between portions having full hold thickness, a recess adapted to receive a text bearing strip in such a manner that the strip will not interfere with the sliding of the plate through the printing machine.
  • the recessed portion or portions is or are so positioned that a portion of the guide rail having full fold thickness is left at each end of the plate, so as to secure an adequate guiding of the plate through the printing machine.
  • the recessed portion or portions may also be so arranged as to be of less height than the guide rail proper, a strip of full fold thickness being left along the side adjoining the printing space of the plate.
  • the depth of the recessed portion may be reduced adjacent to the free marginal edge of the plate as compared with the depth along the printing space.
  • FIGURE 1 is a plan view of part of a plate, as seen looking towards the printing face of the same;
  • FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along line IIII of FIGURE 1;
  • FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view of the plate, taken along line IIIIII of FIGURE 1;
  • FIGURE 4 is a sectional view, taken along line IV-IV of FIGURE 1;
  • FIGURES 5a, b and c are sectional views of respective modifications, these views corresponding to that shown in FIGURE 4;
  • FIGURE 6 is a side view, corresponding to that shown in FIGURE 1, but illustrating another embodiment of the recessed portion
  • FIGURE 7 is a sectional view, taken along line VII-VII in FIGURE 6.
  • 1 is the printing space of the plate, which along both longitudinal marginal edges, of which only one is shown in the drawing, is provided with a flange portion 2 adjoining a guide rail 3 which is formed by double folding the plate material, which may be zinc, aluminum or any other suitable material.
  • the plate may, as known per se, be provided with slots 4 for the reception of tabs, such as indicated at 5, each tab being also provided with a transverse pin 6 adapted to engage a recess 7 at the'bo-ttom of each of the slots 4.
  • the lower portion of the tab 5 engages the interior of the fold 3, as shown in FIG. 4.
  • the fold 3 is provided with i a recessed portion 8, formed by compressing the legs 9 and 10 of the fold perpendicularly to the plane of the plate.
  • This recess'S may extend continuously between points near the ends of the plate, so as to leave a portion 11 of full fold thickness at each end of the plate, for the purpose of guiding the plate through the printing machine.
  • a number of such recesses may be provided, with intermediate portions of full fold thickness.
  • Such recesses 8 are of such a depth that a text bearing strip 12 may be received, in such a manner that the strip will not, due to its thickness, interfere with the sliding of the plate through the printing machine, care being taken that the lower portion of a tab 5 may conveniently be received between the fold legs 9 and 10.
  • the recess 8 may be formed in various manners.
  • FIGS. 5a, b and c three possible forms are shown, in which the fold 3 has retained its full Width along the guide edge, the recess being either made with an oblique bot-tom, or being defined by .a bead 13 extending along the guide edge.
  • the recess 8 extends right out to the guide edge, a longitudinal strip 14 of full fold thickness being left in that part of the fold which adjoins the printing space.
  • the form of the printing plate according to the present invention implies i.e. the advantage that the space in which the text bearing strip is to be placed may extend along a much greater part of the length of the plate than possible in previously known plate forms. At the same time too it is possible to utilize the entire length of the text strip for printing purposes, as the strip is not to be held in position by means of any overlapping portion of the fold. Consequently, .if is also possible to make the text strips from self adhering material.
  • a further advantage is that the height of the fold may be made relatively small, as the entire printing space of the text bearing strip is visible, so that the height of the printing space of the plate is made correspondingly greater while retaining the same total plate height, such height being determined by the printing machine in which the plates are to be used.
  • An article of manufacture comprising a printing plate, at least one guide rail marginally connected with said plate, said guide rail having a generally U-shaped cross-section and including two legs and a connecting section joining said legs, one of said legs having an extremity, remote from said connecting section, connected to said plate, the other of said legs having an indentation directed towards said one leg, and a strip of text bearing material in said indentation, said indentation having a depth at least equal to the thickness of said strip.
  • Arr-article as claimed in claim 2 wherein theconnecting portion is provided with spaced apertures and said indentation extends along a portion of the rail corresponding to a plurality of said apertures.
