Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. Rmcnn, a

. citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in thecounty of Kings and tate of New York, have invented .certain new and useful Improvementsin Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of this invention is to provide a holder for razor blades which embodies a guard for both cutting edges of the razor blade so that the latter will not endanger the user of the blade.

Another object is to provide a modified type of holder having a guard in which a razor blade may be inserted in safe position, and additional means on this modified guard whereby the entire edge of the safety razor is; exposed for use as a cutting or scraping medium. Both forms of this razor blade holder are provided with means for suspending the device from a key ring or the like.

These and other objects will become apparent. in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts of the drawing.

Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razor blade holder.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the modified type of razor blade holder showing a razor blade in position for use therewith.

Figure 3 isa cross sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line 14 of Figure 2.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the rear edge of the razor blade guard, the entire guard being formed of a unitary piece of material folded over on itself intermediate its width, and which after such folding, is curved at its rear end as indicated by the numeral 10.

-The side plates 11 and 12, lying adjacent each other, are secured in such position by a hollow rivet 13, At the lower corner of the plates, an opening 14 passes thru both members 11 and 12, and is adapted to receive a key ring or the like. The end edges 15 of the folded portions 11 and 12 are secured to each other by hollow rivets 16. The upper longitudinal portion of the holder is provided with a channel 17 by deforming the plate members 11 and 12 outwardly and longitudinally of the length. The forward end 18 of the holder has inclined edges 19 from which the corner 20 of a razor blade 21 normally projects. Openings 22 of a substantially similar shape to the exterior outline of the holder are formed in members 11 and 12 and are utilized by the fingers for pulling the'razor blade into the holder.

' The preceding description relates to the holder illustrated in Figures 1 and 3. The modified type of holder shown in Figures 2 and 4 is slightly different in so far as ridges 23 and-24: are formed above the turned-over edge 25. Said ridges extend partly the length of the holder and are secured together at one end by a rivet 26, the edges of said ridge being curved. The remainder of the modified type of holder is similar in every respect to that shown in Figure 1, and the same reference numerals are therefore used to indicate the identical parts in both types. In Figure 1, the razor blade 21 is of the Gillette type, and the razor blade 27 shown in Figure 2 in broken lines, is of the so-called Eveready type, this style of blade being pro-vided with a doubled metallic flange 28 at one of it longitudinal edges.

In using the device as a holder for a razor blade, the latter is inserted between the plates 11 and 12 of the holder, and slipped between said members by permitting the fingers to engage the surfaces of the razor blade thru the openings 22. The knife edges of the razor blade will be guarded between both plates 11 and 12, and in order to expose any portion of the edge of the blade, all that is necessary is to urge said blade outwardly toward the end 18 until sufficient edge is extended for the use desired of the blade. In the device shown in Figure 1, however, the entire edge may not be used, as a portion of the blade must of necessity be retained between the plates 11 and 12 in order to enable the device to rigidly hold the blade. In Figure 2, the entire cutting edge of the razor may be exposed for use by reversing said blade so that the edge will be pinched be tween the ridges 23 and 24, and the remainder of the blade permitted to extend upwardly, the guard flange 28 being retained in the channel 17.

It is to be understood that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

1. A razor blade holder comprising a unitary piece of material folded intermediate its width, a channel provided by deforming the plate longitudinally and arallel to the fold, the portions. of said p ate extending from the deformed part lying in contact with each other and being secured together by rivets, the folded over and contacting portions of said plate being adapted to receive a razor blade therebetween, an inclined edge at one end of the holder being adapted to expose the corner of a razor blade, ridges extending, from the turned-over corners of the plate and lying in contact with each other, one end of said ridges being riveted together, the channel being adapted to receive the guarded edge of a'razor blade having a folded plate enclosing one'edge, and the ridges being adapted to retain 'a razor blade in position in the holder.

2. A razor blade holder comprising a unitary piece of material folded over on itself intermediate its width, the folded portions providing a pair of adjacent plates, a channel formed adjacent the folded edge, said folded edge extending partly the length of the holder, ridges extending parallelto the plates and projecting from approximately one half the length of the holder, said plates being aligned with the ridges, said channel being formed between the ridges and plates,

said plates having inclined edges at one corner.

3. A razor blade holder comprising a unitary piece of material folded intermediate its width, to produce two mutually adjacent plates, a channel formed between said plates parallel with and adjacent the fold, said fold extending partway the length of the 7 J OS. WM. IEGER.
