This invention relates to a cutter, the general object of the invention being to provide a device made somewhat in the form of a pair of scissors but one member of the device having a channel therein and the other member having a razor blade or the like attached thereto for extending into the channel but leaving a part exposed so that cloth, paper and the like can be slitted by pushing the device along the material so that the cutting edge will slit the material.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing where in like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure l is a View looking toward one side of the device.

Figure 2 is a View looking toward the other side thereof.

Figure 3 is an edge view looking toward the channel forming part.

Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 1.

In this drawing, the letter A indicates one member of the device and the letter B indicates the other member, each member including a handle part I and a shank 2, the two members being pivotally connected together as shown at 3. Each handle part includes an eye I so that the two handle parts are similar to the handle parts of a pair of scissors. The shank 2 of the member A has an elongated strip 4 attached thereto as shown at 5, spacers 6 being placed between the end portions of the strip and adjacent portions of the shank so as to space the strip from the shank thereby providing a channel 7. The shank of the member B carries a substantially rectangular part 8 the inner edge of which is beveled as shown at 9 and slopes outwardly from the free end to the end closest to the pivotal point. This member 8 has a flange l0 around its outer side edge and that end which is farthest from the pivotal point and a backing plate II and a blade l2 fit in the space formed by the flange and are removably held in position by a bolt and nut shown generally at [3 which passes through the parts II, l2 and 8 as shown. The blade l2 may be a safety razor blade and as it will be seen when the blade is in position the cutting edge will project from the edge 9 with a portion of the blade extending into the channel.

When the device is used to cut paper, for in- 1 stance, a nick is made by the device in the edge of the paper and then while holding the device closed as shown in Figures 1 and 2, it is pushed along the paper with a sliding motion and thus the blade will cut the paper. 15

When used in cutting cloth the cloth is folded over the channel part with the edges underneath the channel part and grasped between the thumb and fingers of one hand of the user. A nick is made in the cloth and then the device is moved along the cloth the same as in cutting paper.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:-

A device of the class described comprising a pair of members each including a shank and a handle part, means for pivotally connecting the two members together, one shank having a channel therein which opens out through the inner edge of the shank, a plate-like member attached to the other shank part and having a flange around its upper and front edge forming a space for a blade, a backing plate and a razor blade held in said space by a bolt, the lower edge of the backing plate and plate-like part being beveled upwardly from front to rear to expose a greater portion of the rear portion of the blade than the front portion, the rear part of the blade fitting in the channel.
