JONAS N. MILLER, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
HANDKERCHIEF-EXHIIBITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,422, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed March 17, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JONAS N. MILLER, a resident of the city of Decatur, county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibitors for Handkerchiefs, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce an exhibitor for handkerchiefs, 85c. that will hold a number of articles in a compact and artistic manner, and which will permit a single article to be removed without disturbing the others and without the necessity of touching the devlce.
My invention'consists in a band of suitable size and conformation, together with a series of spring-levers pivoted on the band and adapted to coact with the same for the purpose above specified; and my invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming. a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the band with the coacting levers removed. Fig. 4 is a plan of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents my device in use. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a lever, and Fig. 7 shows a spring for the lever.
a are the levers. bis the band. b is a rim on the band. a is a wire on which levers aare fulcrumed. d are lugs on band 6, through which wire 0 passes. e are springs that operate on the levers to hold them in contact with the lower portion of the band. 9 are supports for the band, attached to plate f. his a single pendulous support pivoted in plate f, and provided with a suitable attaching device on its upper end.
The lugs d are recessed on their under surstamp said lugs out of band 12.
The band b is represented as circular and of a size to carry a dozen levers; but both the form and size may be varied indefinitely.
The levers a are represented as formed of sheet metal and provided with a spring; but different materials may be used, and the lever and spring may be combined in one device.
Serial No. 159,153. (No model.)
Supports It should be made detachable from plate f and of various lengths.
The lower ends of the levers press against the lower surface of the band above the rim, and so form points of support for the handkerchiefs, while the upper ends of the same form surfaces against which power is applied when it is desired to raise a lever with the hands.
As each article is held by a separate lever,
there is no difficultyin removing one or more articles without disturbing the others, and the tension of the springs should be so adjusted that an article may be detached by simply pulling the same.
In constructing the device the levers may be placed on. the wire and drawn up over the bottom of the band until said wire rests in the lugs and the ends of the levers are above the rim, when the pressure of said ends against said rim will hold the entire series in position. In filling the exhibitor and in removing the articles therefrom only one lever is raised at a time, so that there is no danger of the wire and levers becoming detached from the band.
The modes of constructing the various parts of my device are such as appear to be most expedient; but itis evident that various modifications may be substituted that will effect the same result in a similar manner.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The multiple clamp for exhibiting handkerchiefs, &c., herein set forth, consisting in a plate or band provided with a rim or elevation, I), and a series of spring-levers pivoted on the band and adapted to operate independently of each other.
2. The combination, in a device for exhibiting handkerchiefs, &c., of a band provided with aseries of lugs, awire extending through the lugs of the band, and a series of springlevers fulcrumed on the wire and adapted to co-operate with the band, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a device for exhibiting handkerchiefs, &c., of a band provided with a series of undercut lugs stamped out of said band, a wire extending through the undercut recesses of the lugs, and a series of spring-levers fulcrumed on said wire and adapted to co-operate with the band, as and crumed on said band, substantially in the maufor the purpose set forth. ner and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a device for exhibit- 6. The combination, in a device for exhibiting handkerchiefs,&c., of a pendulously-suping handkerchiefs, &c., of band b, undercut 15 5 ported band provided with a series of springlugs b, rim (1, wire 0, levers a, and springs e,
levers adapted to co-operate with the band, as as and for the purpose set forth.
