UNITED STATES JAMES ELIAS POTEET,
PATENT Grrrcn.
OF \VORTHAM, TEXAS.
HARVESTING-SACK SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,194, dated March 2, 1886.
Application filed November 30, 1885. Serial No. 184,311. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES ELIAS POTEET, of VVortham, in the county of Freestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesting-Sack Sup porters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved harvesting-sack supporter and attached sack, the latter being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a broken detail of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in supporting devices for harvesting-sacks, being especially adapted for use in corn-pulling, and by cotton-pickers, and its objects are to provide means whereby the sack may be so attached to the picker that its weight will be distributed proportionally over the body of the wearer, and will not strain and tire the back of the person bearing the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A designates a waist band or belt, preferably four or five inches in width, provided at its ends with buckles, straps, or other suitable fastening device, and fastened in front about the waist of the wearer.
The invention will be described as used by a cotton-picker.
B B are bands or straps,of suitable material, which have their rear ends secured a short dis tance apart on the waistband A, and their front ends are secured to the edges of the ends of the belt A, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the belt A is secured around the pickers waist, bands B B will cross the shoulders and keep the belt from slipping.
O designates a strap secured near its center, on each side thereof, to straps B B, as shown in Fig. 1. This strap is of sufficient length to fasten around the breast of the wearer, and is provided at its ends with suitable fastenings for this purpose. Strap Cis connected to bands B B a sufficient distance above belt A so that when adjusted in position on the body of the picker it will pass just under his armpits. To the lower portion or edge of belt A is secured a nu mber of straps, hooks, or other suitable fastenings, D, for apurpose hereinafter explained.
E is a bag or sack of suitable size and make. This bag is provided at its mouth With anumber of fastening devices, e, preferably rings or hooks, adapted to engage hooks or pins D on the lower edge of belt A, so that' the sack may be easily and quickly secured to the belt or removed therefrom, as the picker may desire.
' The sack may be provided with any suitable means for closing its mouth when removed from the belt, thus preventing the escape of its contents.
By providing the belt A and sack E with the fastening devices, as described, it is obvious that the sack may be adjusted quickly and easily in any position around the waist of the wearer, thus allowing the picker to use either or both hands in picking, as he may choose.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the weight of the sack and contents is borne equally by the shoulders and back, the straps G and B forming braces for the breast and back of the wearer and relieving him of undue strain.
It is also obvious that the invention may be used in carrying sacks of grain or guano in planting.
The sack E may be made open at both ends, with its bottom larger than the top, and provided with suitable fastenings, so that when full the sack may be emptied of its contents without detaching the same from belt A.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a harvesting-sack supporter, the combination of the band A, provided with suitable fastenings at its ends and having suitable attaching devices secured to its lower edge, and shoulder-straps B, secured to the belt A, with the bag E, provided at its mouth with suitable devices for securing it to the lower edge of the belt A, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the belt A, provided at its ends with suitable fastening devices and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence 0f 10 two Witnesses.
JAMES ELIAS POTEET.
on its lower edge with a number of attaching devices, as described, and the shoulder-straps B B, secured to it, with the strap 0, secured to the straps B B, and provided with suitable 5 fastenings at its ends, and a bag provided at its mouth with means for attaching the same \Vitnesses:
adjustabiy on the belt A, all substantially as CAREY MAY,
and for the purpose described. HARVEY SINGLETON.
