UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED H. KIDNEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR DISINFECTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,164, dated March 2, 1886.
Application tiled May 2, 1885. Serial No. 164,192. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. KIDNEY, a citizenA of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Disinfectant Holders and Evaporators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a disinfectant holder and evaporator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the device, the parts being in operative position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
My invention consists of a disinfectant holder and evaporator formed of a vesselcontaining a disinfectant, a stopper therefor carrying a strip or piece of absorbent'material which dips into the disinfectant, said stopper being adapted to be held at different heights, so as to adjust the extent of exposure of said strip or piece, thus providing greater or less disinfecting action.
It further consists of a hanger or suspension hook, loop, Sto., so constructed that when the device is not in use said hook or loop holds the stopper in closed position.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a bottle or vessel, preferably formed of glass, containing a disinfecting material and secured to a back board, B, by means of Wires or bands C, which are passed around the vessel in grooves D therein and properly fastened to said board. v
E represents the stopper of said vessel, the same having attached to it a pin, F, which vprojects horizontally from the side thereof and is adapted to be stuck into the board B, for which purpose the latter has a number of openings, G, one above the other, properly strengthened by eyelets or linings forming sockets to receive the pin, although it is evident that the pin, if properly pointed or sharpened, may be made to pierce the board at any desired height. Attached to and depending from the stopper E is a strip or piece, H, of flannel or'other absorbent material, the same dipping into the disinfectant in the vessel A.'
To the top of the back B is pivoted or hinged a hanging or suspending hook or loop, J, the same, when not in use, being adapted to be swung down and folded on the top of the stopper E, and by a pressure thereagainst to take firm hold of said stopper, the effect of which is to prevent leakage of the vessel and adapt the device to be packed and transported without liability to lose the contents of the vessel, which generally are in liquid form.
In order to strengthen the hook or loop J, the Wire of which the same isformed is crossed at the center, forming an eye, K, which also increases the elasticity of the hook or loop and causes it to take firmer hold of the top of the stopper.
When the device is not in use, the parts are in position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when service of the same is required, the hanger is raised and removed and its pin inserted in the opening in the back B. This withdraws a certain amount ofthe strip or piece H from the vessel, whereby evaporation of the disinfectant with which said strip is saturated is permitted. The device may now be hung on a nail, hook, &c., and is fully operative, the position of parts being shown in Fig. 3.
It is evident that by raising or lowering the stopper the extent of exposure of the strip may be increased, by which means provision is made for adjusting the degree of evaporation of the disinfectant, and consequently the disinfecting action.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A vessel for disinfecting purposes provided wth the stopper E, having a pin, F, connected therewith, and an absorbent material, H, in combination with a back board into which said pin may be stuck, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A vessel for disinfecting, having a stopper and a strip or piece of absorbent material connected with the latter, in combination with a suspension device attached to the support of said vessel and adapted to be folded against said stopper,substantial1y as described.
3. A disinfectant holder and evaporator consisting of a. vessel, a stopper, a. vstrip orpiece of absorbent materialfand a. pin connected with said stopper7 a back board or support for said vessel7 and a suspension device,
lsaid pin being adapted to be inserted in said back board and said suspension device to xo hold the stopper in closed position, al1 as stated.
