Description

(No Model.)
D. E. POWERS.
CIGAR BOX.
No. 336,433. Patented Feb. 1 MI" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. POWERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT PAPER CIGAR BOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CIGAR-BOX.
$PECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,433, dated February 16,1886.
Application filed July 10, 1885. Serial No. 171,201.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. PoWERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oigar-Boxes,of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a [O cigar-box of suificient strength to withstand the usual pressure incident to the packing of the cigars, and which can be produced economically in a great variety of sizes without.
the use of expensive machinery.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blanks comprising the body of this improved cigarbox, arranged in such relations to each other as to indicate their proper relative positions. Fig. 2 is a plan of said body, including the bot- 2c tom, before the reenforcingand covering strips are applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of this improved cigar-box,the ornamental j ointcovering strips being omitted from a portion of said figure and one corner of the box being 2 5 broken away. Fig.4.is a plan view,on asmaller scale,of the main blank designed to form a part of the box-body.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
This improved cigar-box is composed offour pieces or blanks-to wit, a main body-blank, A, an auxiliary body-blank,l3,a bottom-blank, O, and a cover-blank, D. These blanks are preferably cut from straw-board covered on one side with a layer of paper stamped in imitation of cedar-wood. The main body-blank A consists of an elongated approximately-rectangular strip of a width equal to the height of the box to be formed, and of alength sufficient 40 to compass the two sides of the box and three times the length of one end thereof. This blank is provided with four transverse scores, w, w, y, and z, and comprises a square or rectangular side section, a, designed to constitute one side of the box, a square or rectangular section, b, designed to constitute the opposite side of the box, a square or rectangular section, 0, intermediate between said side sections and designed to constitute a single layer of one of (No model.)
the double ends of the box, and square or rectangular end flaps, d 6, attached, respectively, to the side sections, a b, at the ends thereof opposite the intermediate section, 0, said end flaps being designed to constitute the other double end of the box. This blank is preferably recessed at its upper edge between the scores w w, and also between the scores y 2, whereby the parts constituting the ends are made to extend above the sides when the box is set up a distance equal to the thickness of the blank, so that the cover will close between the ends of the box flush with the upper edge thereof.
The section b is longer than the section a a distance equal to the thickness of the blank. The intermediate end section, 0, and the end flap, d, are of the same length, and the end flap, 0, is longer than said section and [lap a distance equal to the thickness of the blank, whereby a square corner is secured.
.In setting up this improved cigar-box the side sections, a b, are first folded at right angles to the intermediate end section, 0. The shorter end flap, (2, attached to the side section, a, is then folded at right angles thereto, and the longer end flap, 6, attached to the side section, b, is then folded at right angles to said side section and made to completely overlap the flap d, its outer end being preferably flush with the outer face of the side a. angular auxiliary end-blank B is then placed inside the intermediate end section, 0, of the blank A. The rectangular bottom-blank C is then fitted to the body thus formed, being preferably placed inside said body with its 85 lower surface flush with the lower edge of said body. The severed end of the flap d rests against the inner face of the side I), and both ends of the auxiliary blank B rest against the opposite sides, a b, said blank and flap thus 0 serving as braces and rendering the box stiff and strong. The parts are glued together and a re-enforcing strip, z, composed preferably of cotton cloth or other suitable textile fabric, is glued over the joint between the bottom and 5 body.
The cover-blank D is hinged to the upper edge of one of the sides, preferably by means The rectl of two strips, 9, of cotton cloth, glued to the opposite face of the joint. A fastener, E, of any suitable construction, is then attached to the cover and the front side of the box.
The exterior joints of the box are covered by strips h of ornamental paper, in the usual manner, and the interior of the box is lined with paper.
A box thus constructed is strong, durable, and symmetrical, and can be produced cheaply in a great variety of sizes without the use of expensive machinery for each distinct size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A rectangular cigar-box,the body ofwhich is composed of a blank comprising the two opposite sides, a single end,and a double end, and an auxiliary blank placed against said single end and forming therewith a double end, the said ends being the thickness of the cover above the sides.
2. A blank for the body of a cigar-box,cousisting of a strip having transverse scores w m y z,and comprising rectangular recessed side sections, a b, an intermediate rectangular end section,c, and rectangular end flaps,d e, of corresponding shape, and being the thickness of the cover higher than the recessed sides, substantially as described.
3. A blank for the body of a cigar-box,consisting of a strip having transverse scores w w y z, and comprising rectangular side sections, a b, an intermediate rectangular end section, 0, and rectangular end fiaps,d e,of corresponding shape, said blank being recessed at one edge between the scores 20 and 0c and also between the scores y and z, substantially as described.
4. A blank for the body of a cigar-box,consisting of a strip having transverse scores w w y aand comprising rectangular side sections, a b, an intermediate rectangular end section, c,and rectangular end flaps,d e,of corresponding shape, the end flap, d, being the thickness of the material shorter than the end flap, e, substantially as described.
