BUCKLE.
Patented Feb. 9, 1886.
INVENTOR /b WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYS.
SAMUEL BRETZFIELD,

OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,794, dated February 9,1886.
Application filed November 14, 1885. Serial No. 182,822.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BRETZFIELD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Belt- Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved belt-buckle which is simple in construction, and by means of which the belt can be adjusted to fit waists of different sizes, which buckle is very handsome in appearance.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter,
and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved buckle and part of the belt on which it is held, the buckle being open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the buckle, the same being closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified buckle, the same being closed.
The plate A is provided at one end with the bend B, or flange, provided with a longitudinal slot, and the plate A is provided with the four slots D, forming the bars E, and through the slots and over the bars one end of the belt F is passed, in the manner shown, and thus the plate is held on the end of the belt, and the plate can be shifted on the belt to a greater or less distance from the end, thus permitting of adjusting the belt for waists of different sizes.
From the front surface of the middle bar, E, one, two, or more headed studs, G, pro- 0 ject, and can be passed through the slots H in the other end of the belt F.
On the flange B the plate J is hinged in some suitable manner, and is provided with the apertures K,for receiving the heads of the studs G, and on the outer face of the plate J the hollow relief-plate L is secured, which covers the apertures K and forms areceptacle for the heads of the studs G.
To close the belt the slotted end of the belt is lapped over the plate A. and the studs G are passed through the slots H, and then the (No model.)
plate J is swung over the plate, the heads of the studs G passing through the apertures K in the manner shown, and as the said heads catch on the apertures K the plate J is locked in place on the face of the plate A, and the belt is held closed. The free end of the belt is passed through the slot 0 in the flange B.
To open or unfasten the belt, it is only necessary to swing the plate J from the plate A, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the plate A is not provided with the slots D; but the flange Bis provided with the extension M, parallel with the plate A, but in a differ ent plane and 011 the opposite side of the said flange B, and provided on its outer face with a relief ornament, L, like the ornament on the plate J.
For this fastening the belt must be provided with slots in both ends, the slots in one end serving to hold the buckle on the end of the belt by means of the headed studs G, as shown in Fig. 3, the other end of the belt being fastened in the manner described above.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a belt fastening or buckle, the com bination, with a plate having a projection, of headed studs projecting from said plate, a clasp or plate hinged on the projection and provided with apertures for receiving the headed studs, and a hollow relief-plate on the outer surface of the hinged plate, the cav- 85 ity formed by the said relief-plate serving to receive the heads on the studs on the plate provided with the projection, said studs serving to hold the end of the belt by being passed through apertures in the same, and also serving to hold the clasp or hinged plate over the belt as the heads of the studs pass through the apertures in the said hinged plate or clasp, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a plate provided withja projection, and also with a series of slots forming bars, through which slots one end of the belt can be passed, of the headed studs on one end of said bars, a plate or clasp hinged on the projection of the above-mentioned plate and provided with apertures through which the heads of the studs can be headed studs also serving to lock the clasp 10 passed, and a hollow relief-plate on the face over the belt by being passed through the apof the hinged plate for the purpose of receivertures of said clasp, substantially as herein ing the heads of the studs passed through the shown and described.
apertures in the clasp, the said studs serv- SAML BRETZFIELD ing to hold that end' of the belt opposite;
the one passed through the slots in the lVitnesses: plate by passing the headed studs through OSCAR F. GUNZ, apertures in the said end of the belt, the O. SEneWIoK.
