SCALE AND, RULE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,958, dated December 2 1885- Application filed September 9, 1885. Serial No. 176,564. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SMITH, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scale and Rule Holders, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention pertains to an improved holder designed to hold or clamp arule, scale, and such like articles,which in themselves are necessarily awkward to manipulate, and to so adjust them as to gain the best light on the scaled surface and to afiord convenient handling of the same.
The nature of the device is a strip of sheet metal or other suitable material flexed upon itself longitudinally to make of it a springclamp for its entire length, and to allow one flange to come over on the face or front of the object held, and the other flange to project rearward and form a rest or rigid supportfor said object, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved holder clamping a portion of a scale adjusted for use. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section view of the holder and scale, and shows a modified form of the former.
In the drawings, A designates the entire holder, made of sheet metal bent upon itself longitudinally, forwardly convexly, and rear- Wardly concavely to form a springclamp between the front or clamp flange, a and the bend or fold a, the spring force of which is derived from the loop or rounded portion a 'a designates the back or support flange, forming a support or rest for the device when adjusted with a scale or rule, B, for use.
I make various modifications in the bends or flexures of my device for the purpose of affording a stronger spring to-the clamp, or in order to vary the angle of the face of the scale as it may be desired.
I desire to make no specified claim as to material or form, but broadly claim as a new and useful device in a holder for scales, rules, and the like- 1. A strip longitudinally flexed forwardly convexly, rearwardly concavely, forming, respeetively, a clamp-flange adapted to clamp and rest on the rule, and a support-flange adapted to adjust the face-angle of said rule, as specified.
2. The strip A, flexed, as described, to form a clamp-flange, a a loop, a a bend, a, and a supportflange, a, for the purpose described.
