GEORGE HILLARD HILL, OF WORCESTER., MASSACHUSETTS.
TONGUE-DEPRESSOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application iiled August 22, 1905. Serial No. 275,323.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HILLARD HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vorcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tongue- Depressors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had-therein to the accompanying` drawings.
Figure l represents a side view with the tool removed. Fig. 2 a top view with the tool inserted. Fig. 3 a side view of the same. Fig. 4 a cross section through S. S.
My invention consists of a holder A and a tool B, the latter being inserted into the holder in the socket or recess D as shown in the drawings, Figs. 3 and 4.
A holder consisting of a handle, preferably flat, provided with a socket set at substantially a right angle thereto, to hold the tool. This socket consists of a flat bearing surface and two parallel ears upon the same, said ears being so constructed as to make the socket tapering, to grip the tool. This taper can best be seen in Fig. 3 and its object is to jam the tool B when the latter is inserted.
Hy tool B is a fiat strip of wood or other suitable material about a T1@ of an inch thick and a inch wide depending on the depth and width of the socket to be used. The length of the same measured along the line S as shown in Fig. 2, may be any convenient one but I recommend that it be about three or four inches.
My tool is inserted from the front and shoved back into the socket until it is firmly gripped by the ears a, a. If these ears become bent so as not to grip the tool sufliciently, a slight blow of a heavy instrument on the top will iiatten them and render them eflicient.
The form of my holder allows of no rel volving of the tool while in use, as is found in all former instruments of this kind having,l a separate and detachable tool. Also the tool contains none of the intricate parts of the mechanism and thus simplifies the boiling if such is necessary.
The base of the socket is flat and therefore prevents any upward motion while the ears, attached to the same, prevent any sidewise motion of thetool when in use.
The object of my invention is to examine the throat of a patient and the tool may be readily detached and a fresh one inserted.
After inserting the tool in its socket, the method of use of my invention is the same as other instruments made for the same purpose.
I claim as my invention:
In tongue depressors, combining a holder and tool, a holder having a flat bearing surface, set at substantially a right angle with the handle and tw'o parallel ears thereon so constructed as to form, with the flat bearing surface, a tapering socket, to grip the tool when it is inserted in the holder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE HILLARD HILL.
Vitnesses:
