BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 332,226, dated December 15, 1885, I Application filed September 2,1985. Serial No.175,983. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs S. BRAILEY, a citi-. zen of the United States, residing at \Vauseon, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompaof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention is designed for the purpose of holding a grain bag or sack in an upright position and presenting an open top or mouth into which the grain may be readily poured or shoveled, as in the act of filling the sack; and my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is aperspective view of my invention supporting a bag or sack. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the clamping parts, showing the bag broken away, also the main wires. Fig. 4 is an enlarged View of Fig. 2, taken at right angles to said View. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the brace-wire b. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the locking lever wire L.

The holder is light, durable, and portable, being made entirely of wire, which may be round or flat. The main wire or hoop H is made sufficiently small in diameter to pass freely into the mouth of the bag. I form on its opposite sides two attaching-loops, Z Z. The ends of the hoop-wire terminate with eyes t t, which stand out at right angles to its body, an each eye encircles the opposite end portion of the main wire, asshown clearly in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. I attach a supporting-bail, S, to the main wire, its hooked ends 8 s engaging with the loops Z Z of the main wire H. The bail-wire at the center is looped over, forming the attaching ring R, by which the holder is held to support the bag while filling it by ongaging the ring with a hook or staple driven into a suitable support. The bail-wire is at tached at the center to the main wire at an elevation by the brace-wire 1), its lower end, at 0, being coiled around the inner end portion of the main wire, its upper end coiled over the bail S and its free end bent outward at right angles to its body, forming an engaging-arm, c. I coil around the inner end portion of the main wire H the lower portion of the locking-lever wire L, its end portion projecting rearward and adapted to cross transversely the outer end portion of the main wire, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) which prevents the lever from dropping forward below a horizontal position. The lever-wire L stands, when in a locked or upright position, parallel with and by the side of the brace-wire I), (see Figs. 1 and 3,) and when unlocked it drops forward to a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The joining faces of the brace-wire b and lever-wire L may be serrated to form a more rigid grasp upon the folded portion of the bag.

It will be observed that the device is a portable one, and may be hung up, to support the sack or bag, on a hook at any point convenient.

The operations are as follows: The loop or ring R is caught over a hook, as shown at h, Fig. 1; then the sack is pulled up over the main wire H sufficiently to bring said wire within the mouth of the sack; then the operator with one hand takes up the slack at the top of the sack, on the back side, suffioiently to draw the mouth of the sack to a diameter less than that of the hoop H. The folded portionf of the bag or sack is then pressed against the brace-wire b, and the lever-wire L is forced up, engaging with the arm 0, which crowds it toward the brace b, thereby firmly binding the folded or gathered portion f of the sack between the brace and lever, holding it firmly and preventing the withdrawal of the bag from the holder, and when ready to disengage the bag the lever L is pulled forward at the top, freeing the fold f, when the bag will drop from the holder.

Having thus fully set forth my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a bagholder, the combination of the main wire, the bail attached thereto, the brace- Wire joining; said wires, and the lever-wire pivoted at one end to the main wire and adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the main wire-and having the arm a formed integral therewith, said arm a being adapted to engage with the outer end portion of the main wire, as and for the purposes specified.
