H. W.'GOBURN & D. B. VAN FLEIT.
RIBBON HOLDER.
No. 331,616. Patented Dec. 1', 1885.
llllllllllHllll .1 I I II UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WILSON OOBURN AND DOWNING BEEOHER VAN FLEII, OF NEW- VILLE, INDIANA.
RIBBON-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,616, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed August- 5, 1885. Serial No. 173,667. (No model.
To ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY W. OoBURN and DOWNING B. VAN FLEIT, citizens of the United States, residing at Newville, in the county of De Kalb and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Ribbon-Holders and Invoicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
%)ur invention relates to an improvement in combined ribbon-holders and invoicers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is'a perspective view of our invention as applied to a roll of ribbon. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective View of the same.
A represents a U-shaped yoke, the arms a of which spring inwardly and have in wardlyextending studs a, adapted to enter central openings, [2, that are made in buttons B. These buttons are provided with projecting studs b, by which means they are secured to the core X of the roll of ribbon Z, one of the buttons being secured to each end of the core at the center thereof.
At right angles to the center of the central bar of the yoke is secured the inner end of a fiat bearing-spring, O, which extends outwardly from the yoke, and is provided at its free end with a presser-foot, D, that extends at right angles to the spring and parallel with the central bar of the yoke. This presserfoot is by the inward tension of the spring caused to bear firmly against the free end of the roll of ribbon, and thus prevent the latter from loosening and unwinding on the roll.
On the spring, from the yoke to the presser-foot, is inscribed a scale, E, and on thespring slides an indicator, F, which may be moved by the finger.
The operation of our invention is as follows: When it is desired to unwind ribbon from the roll, the salesman grasps the yoke With one hand and with the other grasps the free end of the ribbon and unwinds as many yards as the purchaser desires. When the piece is cut from the roll, the salesman moves the indicator on the spring-scale to the figure corresponding to the number of yards sold, and then returns the roll to its place. this means it may be readily ascertained how many yards are left on the roll by deducting the number of yards sold, as indicated on the scale, from the number of yards contained in a full roll, and thus save the time and trouble 6 of having to unwind and measure the ribbon when taking an invoice of stock.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. The combination of the buttons B, hav- 6 ing studs b and the central openings, 12, with the yoke having the spring-arms provided with studs a, to enter the openings 1), and the spring 0, for bearing on the free end of the roll, substantially as described.
2. The yoke having spring-arms and the inwardly-extending studs a, adapted to enter the center of the core and journal the yoke thereto, and the bearing-spring O, at-
tached to the center of the yoke for bear- 7;
ing on the free end of the roll, and the foot D,at the free end of the spring, as described.
3. The yoke having its middle portion extending transversely across the circumference of the roll and provided with arms to clasp 8 the sides of the roll, said arms being journaled to the core, and a curved arm, 0, extending at right angles from the middle portion of the yoke, and bearing on the free end of the roll,
as set forth. 5
4. The combination of the yoke adapted to be journaled to the center of the core, the spring secured to the yoke and bearing onthe free end of the roll, the spring having a scale inscribed thereon, and the indicator o sliding on the spring, substantially as described.
5. The yoke having spring-arms adapted to be journaled to the core and press against the sides of the roll, the curved arm 0, ex-
tending from the middle arm of the yoke, and a foot, D, at the termination of the arm 0, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures I in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY WILSON COBURM.
DOWNING BEEOHER VAN FLEIT. Witnesses:
JOHN WHITEHURsT, WILLIAM MEEKS.
