Description
@met (titille.
To all whom 'it may ,concern VALPVHLoNzo BUTTON, dos DUNKIRK, `New YORK.
team Patent N.1o.o12da.wzV May 17, 1870.
IMPRQV'EMENT Vm MEDICINE-CASES.
The Schedule referred t'oiii theseY Letters Patent and making part of the sa'm Beit known that LALIHONZO BTFIYON, of Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua andState ot" New York, have invented alnew and improved Medicine- Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a l fullfclear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makeand use the same,`ref`erence being had to the accompanyingdrawingsforming part of thisspecification.
lhis invention relates to improvements in the construction of medicine-cases, of that class wherein a webct' canvas, leather, or other substance, for the attachment ot' the vials, papers, or other things to be carried in thcvcase, is attached to a spoohand wound on and oft' through a slo't in a circular caser; and
` 'Itconsistsin the application to either one or both ofthe heads of the spools, in recesses in thesaid heads,
. of coiled springs for winding up the web and ratchetl wheels, and spring-pawls to hold the. springs when the webs are drawn out.` Y V y It also consists in an arrangement ofthe web for holding small medicine-vials to be wound up with it ou `the reel, and in therapplication thereto ofa pocketbook. f i
Figure 1-is an elevation `of my improved medicinecase, with the web partly drawn out, and broken ont at the ends to show `the/spring, ratchet, and pawl; Figure 2is atrausverse section, taken 4on the line xxofg.1;and y .l Figure 3 is a section `on the line y y of iig. 1.
Similar let-ters of' referenceirnlicate corresponding parts.` i
Ais a cylindrical.case,`1nade of leather, pasteboard, orl other suitable strong and light substance, with strong ends, ]?',`.oi`` Wood, with circular recesses, C, at the inner faces 5 also, with-a longitudinal slot, D, along .one side nearly from Vend to end.
. `E is the shaft of a spoolqjourualed in the ends B, and having the web F, ofcanvas, leather, or other www substance, attached at one en d to it, so as to wind on or ofi` through the slot D.
Thisv shaft is provided with the disks or collars G at thcen'ds, one of which confines between it and the' thin metal disk H, attached to the inner face of the endB, a coiled spring, I, one end of which is attached to the shaft 'and the other to the head B, and. so `arranged that it has a constant tendency to wind the web F onto the spool.
Between the other collar or disk G and the plate Il is a ratchet-wheel, K, attached tothe collar G, and
provided with a pawl, L, which has a spring, M, to
hold it in engagement with the wheel, and a thumbbit, N, project-ing through the exterior of the case to disengage the pawl, when required to allow the spring to draw the web into the case." i Y This lweb Fis provided with one oir-more elastic bands, O, for confining medicine-vials, samples of cutlery, pens, or other goods, and near the end which draws out of the case a pocket-book,Qis attached.
I propose to place one or more spools in a case, as found best, and to put one or more ot the webs ll ou a spool.
The ratchet-wheel and spring may both be arranged at one end if preferred, and this would be the case when two spools are used, one in cach end of the case. Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters` Patent-T 1. `The combination with the case, one or more spools and webs, of the coiled spring I, ratchetswheel K, pawl and thumb-bit, all substantially as specified.
2. The web F, attached to the spool and provided with the elastic bands Q and pocket-book Q, substaniially as specified. p
' ALPHONZO BUTTON.
