TICKET HOLDER. 1
Patented Oct. 16, 1894.v
` .lwenbp am@ @@fmq- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
l JOHN M. AKERS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TICKET-HOLDER. 1
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent No. 527,644, dated october 1c, 1894.
Application iiled June 25, 1894.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. AKERs, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
l My invention :relates to improvements in ticket-holders, more especially designed for use by patrons ofstreet and steam railways, and passenger-carriers generally, the object being to provide -a ticket-holder adapted to hold a coupon-ticket or slip of tickets, that is simple in construction and consequently quite inexpensive, and that can be carried in a small pocket.
With this object in View my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a ticket-holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section on line v2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3, Figs. l and 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 1. f
Referring to the drawings, A designates a chambered case that is preferably cylindrical in form, as shown. A shaft or spindle 'B extends centrally through case A and has suitable bearing in the ends of said case. Upon one end of said spindle or shaft, and outside of case A, is Xed a hand-wheel or thumband-finger-piece C for turning the shaft or spindle. Upon the other end of said shaft or spindle, and inside of case'A, is xed a ratchetwheel D that is preferably as large in diameter as the size of case A will accommodate. Said ratchet-wheel is engaged by a pawl E .that is pivoted, as at e, within a lateral slot A in case A. The pawl, in its normal position, in which it engages the ratchet-wheel,
protrudes somewhat outside of case A, as at E', so that it can be actuated out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel by the pressure of the thumb or finger. A spring G acts in the direction to retain the pawl in engagement with the ratchet-Wheel. A tubular or hollow member H is shown fixed to the ratchet- Serial No. 515,614. (No model.)
wheel, saidl member H embracing spindle or shaft B and being slotted laterally and longitudinally, as at h, for receiving the one end of the ticket or slip of tickets, member H be- `in case A into recess h in the winding-member H, and the ticket or slip, by means of Y hand-wheel or member C, is thereupon coiled around member H, as shown in Fig.l 3,the arrangement of ratchet-wheel and pawl hereinbefore referred to being such as to prevent the automatic unwinding of theticket or slip of tickets. A ticket of a slip of tickets is readily removed by actuating the ticket-holding-member so as to bring the ticket at the outer end of the slip opposite slot a in the inclosing case. By pressing upon the protruding portion of the pawl to disengage it from the ratchet-wheel thel ticket or slip of tickets, as the case may be, is rendered free to be removed. I would also remark that case A is preferably cut away adjacent slot a, as at a', to accommodate the introduction of the free end of the thumb in oatchinghold of the ticket preparatory to the detachment or removal of the ticket.
What I claim isl A ticket-holder consisting of an inclosing case A slotted laterally and longitudinally, as at a; ticket-winding member H recessed, as at h; suitable meansv for actuating member H to wind up the ticket or tickets; ratchetwheel D 5 pawl E, and spring G, all arranged substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of June, 1894.
JOHN M. AKERS.
