JACKSON A. M. MORRIS, OF LEEPER, MISSOURI.
PENCIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letter Application filed January 29,19
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JACKSON A. M. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leeper, in the county of IVayne, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pencils; and it has for its object to provide an article of this nature having an attachment in the form of a holder carrying the usual eraser at its end and which attachment is constructed and arranged to receive a tape upon which are printed tables or other information, the tape being drawn to the proper extent from the holder when it is to be consulted and being released to be rewound into the holder when inspection is completed.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that it may be manu factured at a low price and will be not liable to disorder.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of the pencil with the tape drawn partly therefrom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken centrally through the holder and a portion of the pencil.
Referring now to the drawings, the attachment or holder consists of a main cylindrical section or member 5, formed, preferably, of brass or other suitable metal and the ends of which are threaded, as shown, and leading longitudinally of the cylinder from one end thereof is a slot 6. A cap 7 is provided for one end of the cylinder and is adapted to be screwed upon the end of the cylinder, this cap having a circumscribing-flange 8, which forms a seat or socket in which is received a rubber eraser 9, the. bottom of the seat or socket having a central perforation 10 therein, forming a bearing for a purpose to be presently explained. For the opposite end of the member 5 from the cap above described there is provided a plug 11, which is hollow, as shown, and is formed of sheet metal, and in this plug is directly engaged the pencil proper, 12.
s Patent No. 701,072, dated May 27, 1902.
02. Serial Ito-91,753. (No model.)
In connection with the structure above described there is employed a winding-drum consisting of a shaft 13, adjacent to one end of which is fixed a disk 14, while spaced from the disk 14 is a second disk 15, the disks being spaced apart a distance slightlyless than the length of the longitudinal slot- Attached to the shaft between the disks is one end of a tape 16,which latter is passed through the slot 6, through which it may be drawn from the drum and through which it may be rewound upon the drum. One end of the shaft is journaled in the perforation 10,while the opposite end is journaled in a perforation 18 in the end of the plug 11, so that the peripheries of the disks are held out of contact with the inner surface of the cylinder. To return the tape to the inclosure of the member 5 after it is withdrawn therefrom, the drum must be rotated, and for this purpose a helical spring 19 is provided. This helical spring is disposed upon the shaft 13 between the disk 14 and the end of the shaft that is engaged in the perforation 18, one end of the spring being attached to the disk H and the other end to the end of the plug. To
struck up from the disk and the end of the plug, and the ends of the wire of which the spring is formed are engaged beneath the loops and are then bent into hook form to prevent disengagement therefrom. When the tape is'drawn outwardly, the spring is wound up, and when the tape is released the unwinding of the spring serves to rotate the drum and wind the tape thereon, thus drawing it into the member 5.
In assembling the parts the tape is attached to the shaft, as above described, and the shaft is then passed into the member 5, the tape passing into the slot 6, after which the cap is screwed into place and may be punched or otherwise engaged against return rotation, the helical spring having already been engaged at one end with the disk 14:. The free end of the spring is then engaged with the plug, and the latter is screwed into place and then held securely by punching or soldering. The tape is markedwith any desired information, such as wages per day at so much per month, board-measure,railroad-time,or other information.
facilitate this attachment, loops 20 and 21 are V ings, a disk and an end closure having each a struck-up loop, a helical spring disposed 15 upon the shaft and having its ends engaged beneath the loops, and a tape attached to the shaft between the loops and passed outwardly through the slot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
JACKSON A. M. MORRIS.
