AMMEL/(V A \g Patented Dec. 2, 1952 OFFICE DEVICE FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH PENS R PENCILS Edouard-Roger Armelin, London, England Application June 29, 1950, Serial No. 171,036. In Great Britain August 3, 1949 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates. to a device for use in connection with pens or pencils.
The device comprises a holder in which are movably housed both a pen or pencil and one or more sheets on which matter is printed or which is or are in blank form.
Means are provided whereby the tip of the pen, which is preferably a ball-pointed one, or the pencil, can be moved forwardly from an inoperative position within the holder to an operative position. Other means are provided whereby the material in sheet form can be uncoiled from within the holder into a visible position externally of the holder.
The sheet material may be in various forms: for example it may be in the form of a small map which can readily be made visible, or it may be in the form of a pad or diary on which notes can be inscribed by the user.
It could also be used for cigarette sheets of paper known as cigarette paper booklets interleaved or otherwise.
In one form of construction the holder or housing is shaped in the manner of a fountain pen, and within this holder is housed a ball-pointed pen which can be advanced or retracted as required. Surrounding the pen is a spool which extends substantially throughout the length of the holder, and a map or a roll of paper is wound on this spool in such manner that it can be readily caused to protrude into an operative position externally of the holder. A projection on. the roll facilitates manual outward movement of the roll, whilst return or inward movement is effected by means of a button and a spring pawl, this movement resembling that of a spring blind. Some other system of effecting inward and outward movement of the roll may be employed.
The holder may be of any suitable material, for example rubber that enables the device to be used as an eraser.
One form of construction of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section,
Fig. 2 is an external view showing a map in its extended position, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings a is an external holder or housing in which is mounted a ball-pointed pen I) which can be moved forwardly or rearwardly as required. This pen is surrounded by a spool c which extends longitudinally throughout the greater part of the length of the housing, a map or sheet material (1 being rolled around the spool. A projection e on the outer end of the map and which protrudes through a slot 1) in the housing allows the latter to be drawn outwardly from the housing into the position shown in Figure 2, whilst inward movement of the map is effected by means of a button 1, spring pawl g and returned spring it, one end of which is attached to the spool c and the other end to the inner wall of the housing a. The tooth k on the spring pawl y is adapted to engage the teeth 15 formed on the inner side of the annular axially extended flange portion 5 of the spool.
The spool c, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is of hollow tubular shape and comprises an elongated barrel portion r which is of relatively large diameter but substantially less than that of the housing a. An annular flange '10 adjacent the inner end of the barrel portion 7 cooperates with a second complementary annular flange at to define a concentric chamber 2 between the outer wall of the spool portion '1 and the inner wall of the housing a for receiving the sheet material or map it which is wound around the spool. Integral with and extending forwardly of the spool portion 1 is a barrel portion 'm of reduced diameter which is adapted to receive the pen or instrument b, as shown in Fig. 1. A third flange portion 1/ is formed on the barrel portion m and cooperates with the flange a: to provide a chamber Z for the spring h. The extended portion m besides providing a suitable barrel portion for receiving the member 1) provides a chamber 0 for accommodating the spring pawl g and button f for releasing the same.
When the pawl is engaged with the teeth 1? carried by the flange portion 8 of the spool the same is prevented from revolving in a direction to roll up the map or sheet material on the spool. By pressing inwardly the button I of the spring pawl g is released from engagement with the teeth on the spool so as to allow the same to revolve under the action of the spring h to roll up the map or sheet material 11 into the housing as heretofore described. One end of the holder is provided with a removable cap 7' that normally encloses the forward end of the pen b. The pen or instrument I) is removably attached to the cap 7' and extends therefrom,
being adapted frictionally to engage the walls of the barrel portion m of the spool. The cap 9' in this manner is held in abutting alignment with the end of the housing a.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a housing, a cap removably mounted on one end of said housing closing the end thereof, a hollow spool rotatably mounted in said housing, said spool comprising an elongated barrel portion of relatively large diameter and a second forwardly extended barrel portion of reduced diameter relative to said first-mentioned barrel portion, a pair of spaced annular flanges on said first mentioned barrel portion and defining a chamber therebetween and concentrically of said spool and housing for retaining sheet material adapted to be wound around said spool, a third annular flange integral with said reduced diameter barrel portion and spaced from the adjacent end flange on said larger diameter barrel portion and defining a chamber for accommodating a spring, a coil spring arranged in said last mentioned chamber having one end attached to said housing and the other end to said spool, said reduced diameter barrel portion forming a third chamber between said reduced diameter barrel and housing, means comprising a spring actuated pawl in said third chamber, teeth on said spool adapted to be engaged by said pawl, and a button member carried by said housing and adapted to engage said spring actuated pawl member for disengaging the pawl with said teeth on the spool to permit the spool to revolve and return it to its initial position after the spool is revolved setting up tension in said coil spring.
