PENCIL OR STYLUS HOLDER- RECGEDING INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 21, 1909.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
Serial lilo. 497,417.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oi-rN L. ZANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils or Stylus Holders for Recording Instruments; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference me ked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in pencil or stylus holders for recording instruments of the various kinds; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of pencil or stylus-holder which comprises a spring-actuated pencil or stylus and a simply constructed and novel means for positively and resiliently retaining the pencil or stylus in its marking position upon the one end-portion of the holder.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and a simply constructed pencil or stylus holder for recording instruments which is of such a construction that. a short piece of the lead of an ordinary lead-pencil can be readily secured in its marking position and has its point effectively pressed for marking upon the record sheet or disk by means of a. simply constructed spring-device of the general charactor and. in the manner hereinafter more fully specified.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel pencil or stylus-holder for recording apparatus; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which is appended to and which forms an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a top view of a pencil or stylus-holder showing one embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 is an end view, of the device, looking in the direction of the arrow in said Fig. 1, said view being made on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 1- is a transverse sectional representation, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 4-4 in said Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a suitable rod or stem, preferably made from wire, and provided at one end with a suitably fcrmed pivot-eye, as 2. The opposite end-portion of the said rod or stem is provided with asuitable socket or holding element 3 for the arrangement therein of a short pencil or stylus, as a. The said socket or holding element may be of any suitable construction, the form herein shown preferably comprising a tubular body 5 which is provided with a rearwardly projecting and internally screw-threaded receiving member 6 into which is screwed the screw-threaded end portion 7 of the said rod or stem 1. Screwed upon the said screw-threaded portion 7 is an internally screw-threaded sleeve 8, said sleeve being formed with a pair of lugs or cars 9 and 10, the ear 9 being provided with a screw-threaded hole 11 and the ear having a hole 12 of a slightly larger diameter than the hole 11, and having a smooth bore.
The reference-character 13 indicates a suitable thumb-screw, the shank of which is passed through the smooth hole 12 and screwed into the screw-threaded hole 11. As shown in Fig. 41 of the drawings, the ears or lugs 9 and 10 may be formed with grooves or recesses, as 14, between which the shank 15 of a suitably formed spring-device is fitted, and suitably clamped or held by the tightening of the said thumb-screw, as will be clearly evident. The said spring device is formed with an upwardly extending portion 16 with which is connected a helical coil 17. Connected with and extending from said coil is a forwardly projecting and slightly curved presser-arm 18, the free endportion of which as will be clearly seen from an inspection of the drawings, is fitted in the recessed end-portion 19 of the pencil or stymoved and readily replaced by a new pencil t or stylus.
I am fully aware that the spring-device may be variously secured to the rod or stem 1, and that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my present invention as described in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my inven tion to the exact arrangements of the said 1 parts as set forth 1n the said specification,
nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustratcd in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A pencil or stylus holder for recording instruments comprising a main stem provided at one end with a pencil or stylusaeceiving socket for the arrangement therein of a pencil or stylus, and a spring-device consisting of a sleeve arranged upon said and thereby efiectively forces the? end-portion of the stem, a pair of clamping ears connected with said sleeve, a thumbscrew connected with said ears, a shank clamped between said cars, a helical coil connected with said shank, and a spring-arm extending from said coil and adapted to be brought in separable engagement with the end of the pencil or stylus.
2. A pencil or stylus holder for recording instruments comprising a main stem formed with a screw-threaded end-portion, a tubular pencil or stylus-receiving element, and a screw-threaded receiving member extending from said element and screwed upon the screw-threaded portion of said main stem,
said tubular element being adapted to re ceive a pencil or stylus, and a spring-device consisting of a screw -threaded sleeve screwed upon the screw-threaded portion of said stem, a pair of clamping ears connected with said sleeve, a thu1nbscrew connected with said ears, a shank clamped between said cars, a helical coil connected with said shank, and a spring-arm extending from said coil and adapted to be brought in separable engagement with the end of the pencil or stylus.
In testimony, that I claim the invention i set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May 1909.
JOHN L. ZANDER.
