L. B. PREISSNER.
'CARPENTER'S CH-ALK LINE.
, APPLICATION FILED M4229. ran.

. INVENTOR ATTO R N EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO B. :ennrssn'na, or HARTFORD, oonnncrrour.
CARPENTERS CHALK-LINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1917. Serial No. 177,750.
To all whom it may concern: 7
. 'Be it known that I, LEO B. PREISSNER, a citizen of the United States, residing ,at' Hartford, in the county of Hartford and Stateof Connecticut, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Carpenters Chalk-Lines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful'improvements in reels, and-more particularly in a reel of the chalk line type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a reel with means for clamping the loose end of the line wound thereupon,
whereby the line may beheld from further Winding or unwinding movement atany;
suitable point, thus doing away with the necessity of knotting the line ab out the spool or reel after using the same.
Another object of the'invention is to provide a line holding attachment which can be readily attached to any standard type of reel, only slight modification of the latter being rendered necessary, thus providing a useful commodity which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
- The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part de Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but' looking in theopposite direction and,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view; In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 indicates a drum which is provided with the usual side flanges 2 and 3. The
I side flange 2 is provided with a radial slit 4 extending inwardly from its 1 periphery toward the center thereof andadapted for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. Extending longitudinally through the drum 1' is a passageway 5, enlarged at one'end to provide'a recess 6. Aplate 7 is secured to the recessed end of the drum 1 and; 1s
equipped with a small opening 8, communi-v eating with the recess 6. Slidably mounted in the passageway 5 is a rod 9 .providedat oneend with an enlarged headlO, saidhead f 10 being slidably 'mounted in the recess 6 co anran patent may he-obtained for flve eente eaelt by addressing the "Commissioner of V and equipped with a reduced extension 11 adapted to project through the opening 8 in the plate-7 to provide a thumb button.
Positioned in the recess 6 and surrounding the rod 9 is a coiledcompression spring 12 having one end thereof bearing against ashoulder 13 and the'opposite end engaging Patented A ge, 1 91s.-
p the head 10. Theopposite end of the rod is bent at right angle to provide a hook 14 which is normally held against the flange 2,
by means of the spring 12.
In the practicaluse of my 14 is normally held againstthe flange 2, owing to the pressure exerted against the head 10 by the compression spring 12. 15 indicates a line wound'upon the drum and device the hook 16 the loose end thereof. When it is desired to secure the line from unwinding the" loose end 16 is passed through the slit 4, then by pressing the extension 11 with the thumb, the rod 9 willbe moved to space the hook 14 from the flange 2, and the loose end of the line is then inserted beneath the hook and is thereby clampedagainst the flange 2.
What I claim is; p 1. A reel, including a drum provided with a longitudinal bore enlarged atone end to form a recess, arod slidably mounted in' said bore, a hook formed on one'end of said rod, a spring. positioned in said recess and surrounding said rod, an enlarged head formed on theopposite end of said rod and engaging said spring, a reduced extension formed on said head and a perforated plate secured to the recessed end of said drum and surrounding said extension. V
2. A device of the character described including a flanged drum having a central longitudinal passage and one flange slotted, a chalk line wound around the drum with one end inserted in the slot, a rod movable longitudinally in the passage, an extension proecting laterally from one end of the'rod to I engage the line between it and the adjacent flange, an extension on the other end of the jrod'projecting from the drum for engage ment by the finger, and resilient means urging the rod in a direction to retain the grasp upon the line. L 7 I g V I In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
