Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. V
EMIL SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,335, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed March 25, 1885. Serial No. l60,061. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL SMITH, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Guff-Holder,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention isto provide a new and improved device of simple construction for holding a cuffon the sleeve-button on the wristband, and which device holds the cuff securely and permits of attaching and removing the cuff very rapidly.
The invention consists in the combination, with two plates pivoted together and adapted to be held on a button, of a stem held to turn on one of the plates, and having two crosspieces at right angles to each other.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of a cuff held by my improved cuff-holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the holder. Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a side view of another construction.
A plate, A, has a notch, B, in one end, and has two ears, 0, formed on the side edges, which ears project upward. A plate, D, having one end notched, has two downwardlyprojecting ears, E,which are pivoted by a pin, F, to the cars 0, around which pin a springwire, G, is coiled, the ends of which rest against the inner surfaces of the plates A and D and press the notched ends together. The notched end of the plate D is bent downward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The upper plate has a recess, H, in its under side at the notched end, and a projection, J, in its upper surface. A stem, K, is pivoted on the end of the plate D, and is provided on its top with a crosspiece, L, and in its lower end with a head, llLwithin the recess H. A cross piece or head, N, at right angles to the cross piece or head L, is formed on the lower part of the stem K, directly above the projection J. The finger ends of the plates A D are pressed together to separate the notched ends, and the shank O of the sleeve-button P is passed into the notch B in the plate A, so that the head Q of the button will be above the plate A. The plates A D are released, and the spring G presses the notched and bent end of the plate D upon the head Q, and thus the device is held on the button P in the wristband T. The head L is passed through the buttonholes Vin the inner end of the cuff R, the said head being parallel with the buttonholes, and then the heads L are turned at right angles to the button-holes, whereby the crosspiece N is brought into a position parallel with the button-holes and passes into them, and thus prevents'the stem from turning and keeps the head L at right angles to the buttonhole.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 teeth at are formed in the edges of the plates A and D, so as to permit the device to grip on the edge of the wristband, 800., for the purpose of holding the attachment to the said band more securely, or for holding it in case the button is detached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cuff-holder comprising two spring-operated plates pivoted together to form grasping-jaws at one end, and one of said plates having a headed stem on its outer face at its grasping end, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with two pivoted springoperated plates constructed with graspingjaws at one end, of a horizontally-turning stem pivoted on the outer face of one of said plates, over its grasping end, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination,withtw0 pivoted springoperated plates having grasping-jaws formed at one end, one grasping end being notched, of a headed stem on the outer surface of the opposite plate, near its grasping end, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with two plates pivoted together, of a stem held to turn on the end of one of the plates, a cross piece or head on the upper end of the stem, and a cross-piece on the lower part of the stem, and at right angles to the cross-piece on the end of the stem, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a spring-clamp, of the stem K, having the cross-pieces L and N at right angles to each other and formed on the stem, substantially as herein shown and the plate A, and having its end bent, of the 10 described. I a stern K on the plate D, and having the cross.-
6. The combination, with the plate A, havpieces L and N at right angles to each other, ing a notch, B, and the plate D, pivoted tol substantially as herein shown and described.
5 gether, of the stemK, having the cross-pieces L and N at right angles to each other, substan' EMIL SMITH tially as herein shown and described. Witnesses:
7. The combination, with the plate A, hav- ANDERSON WOODs, ing a notch, B, and the plate D, pivoted to EDWARD M. SMITH.
