2 Claims. (Cl. 24113) The present invention relates to the jewelry art, and has specific reference to a novel cover for a sewed button.
The usual dress shirt has cuffs with button holes to receive detachable metal cuff-links, but many men prefer to use cuffs with sewed buttons, and such cuffs are standard for womens shirt waists. The sewed button of cuffs and pockets with flaps, as Well as shoulder buttons, are readily made ornamental by detachably mounting a cover thereon.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel cover for a cufi button or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ornamental cover for detachable mounting on a button.
A further object is to provide an ornamental housing into which a button is removably received.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts, more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.

Fig. 8 is an enlarged section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 5.
The novel cuff button cover 10 is shown mounted on a cuff button in Fig. 1, whereby the appearance of a detachable cuff button is simulated. The cover 10 includes a base 11 and a top 12 hinged thereto, the base 11 being preferably of sheet metal and having a button plate 13 with a central button receiving slot 14, the outer edges 15, 16 of the button plate being rounded as illustrated. The plate 13 has two upstanding sides 17, 18 with inwardly inclined front catch edges 19, 20 and pivot openings 21, 22 at the rear portions thereof, and the top 12 has an upper ornamental plate 23 with a hinge roll 24 at the rear edge thereof adapted to align with the openings 21, 22 for receiving a pivot pin 25 therethrough, and a forward downwardly extending latch edge 26 which is adapted to snap seat over the catch edges 19, 20 when the top is snapped down after a cuff button 27, see Fig. 2, is received in the bottom plate 13. The catch edge26 has a finger engageable tab or lug 28, see Fig. 4, to facilitate opening movement of the top 12.
The novel cover is thus adapted to receive a cuff button or the like, and to removably lock the cuff button within the cover, whereby the cuff displays an attractive ornamentation.
A modified button cover construction is illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8, the cover 29 having a hollow housing 30 with a flat lower plate 31 and an arched top plate 32, the lower plate being cut away as shown in Fig. 7 to provide a central recess 33 and side portions 34. 35 having rounded front edges 36, 37 which slightly incline downwardly. see Fig. 8, whereby a button may be removably received Within the hollow housing. Two spaced hinge ears 38, 39 are provided at the rear of the top plate 32, for receiving the hinge roll 40 and hinge pin 40a of an ornamental lock lever 41 which is shaped to seat over the arched surface of the top plate, the lock lever 41 having a depending tongue 42 adapted to extend through a slot 43 in the forward portion of the top plate for locking a received button in place, and also having a front cam edge 44 for releasable snap locking engagement with the forward edge of the housing.
The described and illustrated button covers thus provide a novel detachable ornamentation for a sewed button on a sleeve cuff or the like, and may be applied to other uses, as for example to ornament a pocket flap having a sewed button, or to mount insignia on a shoulder button. The cover is preferably of metal, but any suitable material such as ornamental plastic may be used in whole or in part therefor.
Although I have described a specific constructional feature of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an ornamental cover for a sewed button, a hollow button receiving housing having a bottom plate, an arched top plate extending over said bottom plate, said bottom plate being spaced at its forward edge from the forward edge of the top plate and having a central recess extending to the forward edge thereof, whereby a sewed button may be received within said housing, said top plate having an opening adjacent its front edge, a lock lever hinged to said top plate and having a tongue adapted to extend through said opening when the lock lever is seated on the top plate, and means for releasably securing the lock lever to the top plate.
2. In an ornamental cover for a sewed button, a hollow button receiving housing having a bottom plate, an arched top plate extending over said bottom plate, said bottom plate being spaced at its forward edge from the forward edge of the top plate and having a central recess extending to the forward edge thereof, whereby a sewed button may be received within said housing, said top plate having an opening adjacent its front edge, a lock lever hinged to said top plate and having a tongue adapted to extend through said opening when the lock lever is seated on the top plate, and means for releasably securing the lock lever to the top plate comprising a cam edge on the forward part of the lock lever snap engageable with the forward edge of the top plate.
