BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,232, dated November 10, 1885.

Application tiled July 24, 1885.

.To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, MosEs L. HALL,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leon, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle connected to straps forming a portion of the harness. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts of the buckle separated.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to that class of buckles in which a strap is clasped or clamped instead of held by a tongue; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the base-plate of the buckle, which has flat raised bails B and C at its ends, and the bottom of which is provided with serrations D, pointing against the direction of strain on the billet E. The side edges of the base-plate are provided at or near their middles with upwardly-turned lips F F, which are connected by a rod, G, and a wide cam, H, turns upon this rod and is provided with a flat leverplate, I, projecting at a right angle to the thickest portion of the cam. A long rectan-V gular bail, J, is secured to the doubled end of the strap K, and a wedge, L, is pivoted with its thick end upon the outer end of this bail, the side pieces of which slide against the side edges of the base-plate, laterally-projecting lugs M M upon the ends of the bail C, through which the outer end of the billet passes, bearing against the upper sides of the said side pieces and guiding them.

' baseplate and the wedge is placed upon the upper side of the billet and forced with its thin end under the cani, which is turned to have its thinnest side facing toward the billet. The wedge is now drawn in as far as it can be forced and the cam is turned so as to clamp against the upper side of the wedge. when it will be seen that the billet will be clamped between the serrated bottom of the buckle and the wedge, which again is held by the cam, so that it will be conned without any possibility of slipping. It will also be seen that the entire surface of the billet is clamped, and that the buckle may be secured at any point of the billet, thus giving the buckle agreat advantage over the usual tongue-buckles, mak' ing the strain even over the entire width of the billet and avoiding the necessity of cutting holes in the billet,or of either tightening or loosening the strap too much.

The bite of the buckle will increase as the strain upon the billet is increased, and the buckle canin no possible manner become loosened by slack upon the strap or billet, inasmuch as the clamping-cani will have its thick- 7 5 est portion bear against the wedge as long as the lever-plate rests against the face of the billet, and the lever-plate cannot be raised eX- cepting by prying it up with a inger or suitable convenient tool.

The buckle may be unlocked by sim ply raising the cam-lever plate, when the wedge may slip out fromA under the cam and the billet may be drawn out or be drawn farther into the buckle, shortening it.

The buckle may be used for any purpose where a buckle is to be used, although I have shown it here applied to the ends of the backstrap and belly-band of a set of harness, the billet E being the trace and the strap K being 9o the hame-tug, the base-plate being modified with regard to lateral bails or extra bails, according to the purpose for which the buckle is to be used.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 9 3 and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a buckle, the combination of the baseplate, having twoA lips at its side edges connected` by a rod, a cam pivoted upon the rod VIoo and having a lever at a right angle to its thickest portion, awedge-shaped piece sliding under the cam and provided with a horizontal perforation through the larger end, and a bail secured in the said perforation in said Wedge and to the straps of the harness, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. In a buckle, the combination, with a bi1- let and buckle end of a strap, of a base-plate having at Wide hails at its ends for the passage of the billet, and having upright lips at its side edges connected at their ends by a rod, a Wide cam pivoted upon the rod and having a lever-plate at a right angle to its thickest portion, a Wedge-shaped piece perforated at 15 itsthicker end, and a rectangular bail secured I therein and to the straps of the harness, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
