To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown thatI, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden, State of Mas- 5 sachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastener Rods,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a button-fastener rod embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of said rod. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 4 shows two views of a single fastener like those composing said rod.

This invention relates to improvements in rods adapted to be fed to button-setting machines, there to be divided into button-fast- 20 eners as required.
The principal object of my invention is to furnish such a rod vshich shall be easily divided into separate button-fasteners, and which shall render unnecessary the employment of z 5 button-fastener packing-eases. v
To this end the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings a single button-fastener of 0 the kind shown and describedin United States Patent No. 314,684, dated March 31, 1885, is shown in side and edge view in Fig. 4.
In manufacturing my improved rod I take a quantity of those or similar button-fasteners, a a, and placing them side by side, as in 5 Fig. 1, unite them into a red by means of some suitable adhesive substance, then or previously applied to their surfaces. This adhesive substance may be metallic, as tin or solder, or non-metallic, as shellac or other gum. 4.. If metal or alloy is used, the fasteners may first be covered with a thin coating of the metal, and then heated sufficiently to melt it and cause them to stick together into a solid mass. Gum or other suitable non-metallic 43 material may be applied in substantially the same manner by the appliances ordinarily employed for performing similar operations in other arts.
It should be understood that solder or alloy 5, or other adhesive material used should have but slight tenacity, so that the fasteners may be readily separated as they are wanted for use by the driver of a buttonfastener-setting machine.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and therefore desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States- As a new article of manufacture, the im proved button-fastener rod herein described it consisting in button-fasteners united by ar adhesive substance, substantially as set fort FRANCIS H.
