To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J Snnwnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of buttons, and more especially to buttons which are covered with cloth or fabric on both their inner and outer surfaces to match that to which they are attached, the objects being the production of such buttons by the person making the article to which they are to be attached, such as caps, vests, coats and the like, rather than by a button maker, that is to say, this invention will enable a cap or garment maker to make buttons to match the garments by covering the body of a button with scrap pieces of the same cloth or lining being used, as is more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved button, assembled, on a piece of cloth and lining, shown in section; Fig. 2 is the outer half of a button shown in central vertical section Fig. 3 is the inner half of a button, shown in central vertical section; Fig. 4 is a bottom view of Fig. 2, partly shown broken away to show construction; and Fig. 5 is a vertical central sectional view of a modification of my invention.

The use of automobile, golf and other caps generally, as well as ornamental buttons placed on vests, ladies garments, &c. has created a demand for buttons which are usually covered with a fabric to match the article to which they are attached, and owing to the difficulty to get a small quantity of such buttons, great annoyance and delay is caused in filling orders for goods perhaps all ready for delivery, but awaiting the comparatively small item of buttons.

My invention permits any garment maker to buy bodies of buttons and cover the same with fabric himself.

A button in accordance with this invention includes two sections, one of which is termed the outer section and indicated by the reference character said outer section 'being shown separately in Fig. 2 and the other of which is termed the inner section and which is indicated by the reference character B and said inner section is shown separately in Fig. 3.

Referring to Fig. 2, the outer section -A consists of a hollow shank 1 provided with an annular flange 1 which is curvilinear in contour and formed integral with one terminus of the shank 1. That terminus of the shank 1 with which the flange 1 is formed integral is rounded as at 1 The section A further comprises a head 2 which terminates in the flange 1 and snugly engages the upper face of said flange and is conveXo-concave in contour with the central portion thereof depressed as at 3, said depressed portion being substantially concavoconvex in cross-section and the said depressed portion 3 depends into the shank 1. The portion of the head 2 at the side of and in connection with the concavo-conveX portion 3 and also in connection with the rounded upper terminus 1 of the shank 1 forms a recess 1 for the reception of one terminus of the shank of the-section B to be presently referred to.

The inner section B consists of a hollow shank 4 of less diameter than the shank l and has formed integral with one terminus thereof an annular flat flange 4 and formed integral with the flange 4 and abutting against the said flange 1s a head 5 which is also flat.

The head 2 of the section A is covered by a piece of fabric 6, the fabric being inturned against the inner face of the flange 1. The fabric 6 is held in place by a washer 7 formed of a suitable fabric and which has one face thereof provided with an adhesive material 8 adapted to engage the inturned ends of the fabric 6 whereby said fabric 6 and washer 7 are connected together and said fabric 6 maintained in posit-ion. The washer 7 is mounted upon the shank 1 and provided with a backing 9, said backing 9 consisting of a metallic washer.

The inner section B when covered is substantially the same as the outer section A and in this connection 10 denotes the fabric which incloses the head, 11 the fabric washer, 12 the adhesive material, and 13 the backing consisting of a metallic washer, the elements 10, 11, 12 and 13 are arranged similar to that of the elements 6, 7, 8 and 9.

The fabric 14 of the garment to which the button is attached, is usually backed by a lining 15.

In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the length of the shanks 1 and 4 are increased to permit use of a double flanged eyelet 16 interposed between the metallic washer 9 and the fabric 1 1 and which causes the head of the outer section to stand away from the fabric 14;.

The manner of setting up a button in accordance with this invention is as follows: To manufacture a button of a construction set forth herein so as to match the material to which the buttons are to be fastened, a disk of the material of greater diameter than the head of the section of the button is cut, the disk is then laid on a block having an opening of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the head, the head is then laid on the disk and depressed in the openings which causes the marginal portion of the disk of the material to stand up, the fabric Washer is then shoved down on the shank so that it will engage the marginal portion of the disk of material and the adhesive material engage the inturned portion of the disk, said inturned portion being engaged with the fabric washer and the disk of material which constitutes the covering for the head is secured in position, after which the metallic washer is pushed down against the adhesive washer. Both sections of the button are constructed in the same manner.

The cap or garment is then pierced and the shank of the outer section pushed through the opening; after which the shank of the inner section is inserted and the two parts pressed tightly together; the edge of the shank of the inner section strikes the concaved part of the outer button and is pressed outward, projecting into the recess 1 whereby the shanks are coupled together as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

In a double breasted vest, the blind side may have buttons fastened on as shown in Fig. 1 and described above, but 011 the buttoning side, a small double flanged eyelet,

16, may be used as is shown in Fig. 5, so as to permit the button hole to pass over the button head and be fastened. (No button hole is shown.)

Such being my invention what I claim is:

1. A button comprising an outer section having a head and a hollow shank, said head having the central portion thereof depressed and extending into the shank and said head forming in connection with one terminus of the shank a recess, an inner section provided with a head and a shank adapted to extend in the shank of the outer section, said shank of the inner section having the inner terminus thereof enlarged and projecting into said recess whereby said sections are coupled together, a covering inclosing each of said heads, a flexible washer mounted upon each of the shanks and provided with an adhesive material engaging with a covering whereby the covering and washer are secured together, and a washer formed of rigid material and mounted upon each of the shanks and abutting against said flexible washer.

2. A button comprising an outer and an inner section each provided with a shank, the shank of one section coupled to the shank of the other section, each of said sections provided with a head, a covering for each of said heads, each of said coverings having an inturned portion, and a pair of washers mounted upon each of said shanks, one of said washers of each pair of washers provided with an adhesive substance for securing the inturned portion of a covering to said washer to maintain the covering in position upon the head.
