UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. WEYMAN, OF CLAYTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES T. WEYMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
JAR-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 329,792, dated November 3,1885
Application file-d August 27, 1885. Serial No. 175,456. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WEYMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Clayton, county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in PreserveJar Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a central vertical section of a [O preserve-jar fastening embodying my invention, this consisting of a clamp which is connected with the lid of a jar by means of a screw, whereby it may be rotated and engaged with the neck of the jar, so as to tighten the lid in position and form a tight joint.
The invention also consists in journaling the clamp to the screw so that it may be freely rotated thereon, and is prevented from being disengaged therefrom, avoiding loss of either part.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a fruit or preservejar, and B the lid thereof, said jar having on its neck spiral lugs or threads 0.
2 D represents a clamp, which is centrally connected with the lid B by means of a headed screw, E, to which it is secured by being placed around the neck of the screw, the head thereof being afterward attached to the body 0 thereof by brazing or riveting, or formed by hammering, and consists of a bar, strip, or piece of suitable metal having a central opening to receive the screw and lips D on its ends, the latter being adapted to engage with 3 5 the lugs 0, so that by rotation of the clamp the lugs ride down said lugs, and thus press the lid firmly against the gasket on the neck of the j ar and form atight j oint between the parts. The lid has a threaded opening to receive the screw E, and the clamp may be readily re movedby proper operation of the screw; but in practice it is intended to have the screw remain in position in the opening in the lid to prevent separation or loss of the parts. The screw has a neck, E, leaving a shoulder, E, between which and the head of the screw the contiguous portion of the clamp is fitted, the clamp thus being journaled to the screw, and permitted to rotate thereon, and prevented from being disconnected from the screw, the loss of either part thus also being prevented.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A preserve-jar fastening having a clamp and a screw, which latter is formed with a neck having a shoulder, between which and the head of the screw the clamp is journaled, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The Vessel A, having spiral lugs O, in combination with the lid B, and clamp 0, having lips D, and secured to said lid B by screw E, having neck E and head E the said clamp being connected to said screw, substantially as described.
GEORGE w. WEYMAN.
