THOMAS H. COSTELLO, OF ENGLEWOOD, ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,568, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed June 16, 1885. Serial No. 168,907. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg/ concern,.-
Beit known that 1, THOMAs H. OosTnLLO, residing at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure 1 is an elevation showing two hinges attached to two pieces. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing one hinge attached to two pieces. Fig. 3 is a section at line :c of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing one leaf of the hinge with the two connecting wires. Fig. 5 is a section at linex of Fig. 4, looking up. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a sec,- tion at line y of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a central verticalsection at line x of Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is an edge view showing one-half of the hinge. Fig. 10 is a section at line an of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is an elevation showing' a single hinge applied to the edges of two pieces. Fig. 12 represents a modification to be used in heavy hinges, similar to those shown in the preceding figures. Fig. 13 is a plan showing a modiication containing the leading feature of my invention, and Fig. 14 is an edge view of the modification shown in Fig. 13. Figs. 2 to 14, inclusive, are enlarged as compared with Fi 1.
'Ihe leading object of my invention is to provide a hinge well adapted to be applied to doors, screens, or other articles designed to swing or fold both ways, and which can be cheaply made; and it consists in connecting the two parts or leaves of the hinge by means of two rods or bars, each pivoted at one end to one leaf or part of the hinge and at the other end to the other leaf or part, the rods or bars arranged to cross each other, as shown and described. That which I claim to be new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A B represent two pieces of wood, one of which may be considered as a part of the door and the other a strip secured to the casing to receive the door; or these two pieces A B may be considered as two adjoining parts of a screen or other hinged article connected by my hinges.
rlhe hinge, as shown in all of the figures except 13 and 14, consists of two parts, O D, connected together by two rods or wires, a b.
The edges ofA the pieces to which the hinges are applied are circular or rounding in form, and the parts C D are adapted to be let into such rounded edges, and are secured thereto by means of screws. (See Fig. I10.) l The form of the yparts OD will be understood from the. drawings, and they are duplicates of each.
other. The central part of each part O D is provided with a rearward projection, d, which is to be let into the strip vto which the hinge is applied, and this part D forms a chamber, g, to receive the connecting-wiresv aib.v These 'connecting-wires are bent at their ends, and
such bent ends are inserted in holes in the upper and lower walls of the chamber g, and cross each other diagonally when the parts are in the position shown in.Fig. 3, in which the. position of one of these wires is indicated b y 7o dotted lines. These wires might be looselyy riveted in place; but I prefer to hold them in Y place by means of a metal leaf, e, which is provided with two lugs, f, which pass through holes in the rear wall of the chamber g, and are riveted thereto, as shown in Fig. 7. These leaves c are located between the two connecting wires or rods c b, and prevent them from slipping out of place, the leaves e being inserted and riveted in place after the wires a b have been inserted in their receiving-holes.
In Figs 2 and 3.l the two parts A Bi are in the same plane, and in Fig. 11 the two parts A B are parallel to each other.
In use, if the hinge be attached to two movable parts either one can be swung over and around the other, the ends of the wires a b being the pivotal points, and the position of these wires changing relative to each other, as indicated in the drawings. The connecting-wires a b are of the same length, a being connected at one end to G,a little to the right of its center, and the other end being connected to the right of the center of D, while the wire b is connected to the left of the center of C and to the left of the center of D, looking at Fig. 11; or, to state this in another way, the opposite ends of the wires are connected to opposite sides of the parts C D, as shown in Fig. 3, and these wires being of the same length, and being connected as described, allow the rotating part to swing in a circle. Suppose the piece A to be fixed. Then the piece B can be made to swing from one side IOO to the other of A. vIf neither part A nor B is fixed, but they are only hinged to each other, either one can swing upon the other, and the two parts can be folded together, as sh own in 5 Fig. 11, andthey may be folded together either and 14) C D are two fiat parts or leaves. va
way. Y
If the hingesare to be used with heavy articles,it may be desirableto provide them with an additional support, which may be done as shown in Fig. 12, in which the part D is provided with a recess, h, near its lower end,and the part Gis provided with a projection, t', which enters the said recess. As the hinges swing the projection i moves in the recess h,
and thus a ,bearing` is formed which aids toA prevent the sagging of the parts.
In Figs. 13 and 14 llA have shown a hinge containing the leading feature of my invention, but adapted to be let into and secured to the ends of two pieces, A B. "In these figures (13 is a bar having its opposite ends pivoted to opposite sides of the two leaves, and b is anisfalso adapted to be secured to the sides of two pieces which are designed to be folded over onto each other lengthwise. It will be observed by looking at Fig. 13 that if the leaf O remains stationary the other leaf, D', canL be folded over so that its upper edge will rest upon the upper edge of C.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hinge consisting of the leaves C and D, having circular adjacent edges and rigid bars a and b, pivotally connected at their ends to the leaves, respectively, and arranged diagonally to each -other at opposite sides of the leaves, substantially as shown and described.
2. A hinge consisting of two leaves or parts, C D, each having a chamber, g, in combination with two rods or bars, a b, pivoted to the parts G D, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. A hinge consisting of two leaves or parts, OD, each having a chamber, g', in combination with two rods orbars, a b, pivoted to the parts C D, and pieces e, secured in the chamber g and between the rods or bars a b, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. The combination, in a hinge, of the parts or leaves (l D, rounded or circular at their meeting edges, as shown, and connected together by bars a b, pivoted at their opposite ends to opposite sides of the two leaves, the rounded or circular vportion of part D being provided with recess h and the rounded portion -of part C provided with the projectionor flange i, which fits and has its bearing in th recess h, substantially as described.
