(Cl. 24-265) This invention relates to a clip for guiding and transporting the leading end of a web through drying or similar apparatus.
In United States Patent No. 3,085,346, issued April 16, 1963, a threading clip is described and illustrated for gripping one marginal side edge of the leading end of a web and conveying the latter through drying or similar apparatus. In this prior patent, the clip includes a spring consisting of triangular or rectangular spring elements inlaid in what is termed as a pair of shanks mutually opposed and connected to one another. The shanks, and hence the spring elements are forced apart so as to permit the introduction of the marginal side edge of the leading end of the web therebetween. When the marginal side edge of the leading end of the web has been so positioned, the spring elements and the shanks are permitted to return to their normal operative position thereby gripping said marginal side edge of the leading end of the web.
Whilst this form of threading clip has been perfectly satisfactory in its application heretofore, in the case of certain webs it has been found desirable to grip both marginal side edges of the leading end of the web during a threading operation through drying or similar apparatus.
Thus, it is the object of the present invention to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive web threading clip whereby both marginal side edges of the leading end of the web will be gripped and led through the drying or similar apparatus.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a clip for guiding and transporting the leading end of a Web through a drying or similar apparatus; said clip comprising a pair of mutually opposed and substantially aligned wings each integrally and hingedly connected, at one end thereof, to a main connecting body portion; and cooperating spring means located within each said wing and said body portion and arranged so as to grip the leading end of said web between said wings and said body portion.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one form of double clip threader;
FIGURE 2 is a detail view of the form of spring elements shown diagrammatically in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a detail View of an alternative form of spring elements which can be employed with the type of clip threader shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of another form of double clip threader.
Referring to the drawings, and in particular to FIG- URE 1, it will be seen that the double clip threader is constituted by a pair of mutually opposed and substantially aligned wings 1 respectively integrally and hingedly connected to and along the opposite edges of a main connecting body portion 2. Located within each wing portion 1, and extending longitudinally thereof, are a plurality of substantially triangular shaped spring elements 3. One end of the spring elements 3 in each wing 1 is connected to a common spring spine 4. Located within the connecting body portion 2 are a number of cooperating similar substantially triangular shaped spring elements 5 which, at one end thereof and by means of the common spring spine 4, are connected to the remaining ends of the spring elements 3. The spring elements 3, 5 and common spines 4 are shown in greater detail in FIGURE 2.
If desired, the cooperating spring elements may be substantially rectangular-shaped as is indicated at 13 and 15 in FIGURE 3, being mounted on a common spring spine 14.
As is shown in FIGURES 4 and ,6, with reference to FIGURE 5, the substantially triangular-shaped spring'elemerits 25 contained within the main body connecting portion 2, can extend across the entire width of the latter and be connected at opposite ends, to the common spines 24 which also mount the wing spring elements 23. As is shown in FIGURE 6, rivets 6, or other suitable means, are provided to retain the spring elements 23 and 25 within the wings 1 and main body connecting portion 2, respectively.
Alternatively, and as is shown in FIGURE 7, substantially rectangular-shaped spring elements 35 located within the main body connecting portion 2 can extend across the entire width of the latter and be connected, at opposite ends, to the common spines 34 which also mount the wing spring elements 33.
The material forming the wings 1 and the main body connecting portion 2 can be of any suitable material but is preferably formed of canvas.
The leading end of the clip is angulated, as at 7 in FIGURES 1, 4, 6 and 7 so as to permit easy threading into the drying or similar apparatus, and terminates in a lead 8 which is capable of attachment to any suitable pilot such as that, for example, illustrated in FIGURES 7 and 9 of the above-mentioned prior US. Patent No. 3,085,346, said pilot being capable of insertion into the drying or similar apparatus, in known manner.
Each marginal side edge of the clip is preferably provided with a longitudinally extending flange 9 adapted to be gripped between the feed rollers of the drying or similar apparatus.
The operation of the clip is such that the wings I are opened or hinged about the spring spines, against the tension of their associated spring elements, thereby permitting the leading end of a web W to be inserted into the clip. When the web W has been so positioned, the Wings 1 are permitted to return to their normal operative position against the body 2 under the influence of the spring elements. For the sake of clarity the wings 1 in the drawing are shown in partially opened condition whereas, in fact, the web W is firmly gripped between said wings 1 and the main body connecting portion 2.
From the above description, it will be appreciated that the entire leading end of the web W will be gripped by the clip and, hence, will be subjected to even tension and stress, thereby considerably reducing the risk of breakage of said web.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A clip for guiding and transporting the leading end of a web through a drying or similar apparatus; said clip comprising a lightweight body portion corresponding in width to the width of said leading end, a pair of mutually opposed and substantially aligned wings, respectively integrally and hingedly connected to the opposite side edges of said body portion; and cooperating spring means located within each said wing and said body portion and arranged so as to resiliently and releasably grip the opposite marginal portions of the leading end of said web between said wings and said body portion.
2. A clip according to claim 1 wherein said spring means include substantially triangular-shaped spring elements.
3. A clip according to claim 1 and including a longi- 7 3 tudinally extending flange adjacent each margin-a1 side edge of said clip.
4. A clip according to claim 1 wherein said spring means include substantially rectangular-shaped spring elements.
5. A clip according to claim 3 and including means for retaining said elements in position within said wings and said body portion.
6. A clip according to claim 3 and including a longitudinally extending flange adjacent each marginal side edge of said clip.
7. A clip according to claim 1 wherein said spring means include spring elements located within said body portion extending substantially across the entire width of the latter and being connected, at either end thereof, to spring elements contained within said springs.
8. A clip according to claim 7 including means for retaining said elements in position within said wings and said body portion.
9. A clip according to claim 7 including a longitudinally extending flange adjacent each marginal side edge of said clip.
10. A clip for guiding and transporting the leading end of a web through a drying or similar apparatus; said clip comprising a body portion corresponding in width to the Width of said leading end, a pair of mutually opposed and substantially aligned wings, respectively integrally and hingedly connected to the opposite side edges of said body portion; and spring means comprising a plurality of Wing spring elements located within each said wing and body spring elements located Within said body portion, and cooperable to resilient-1y and releasably grip the opposite marginal portions of the leading end of said web between said wings and said body portion, the cooperating wing and body spring elements being interconnected by means -of common spring spines, each said spine being located within the clip along an associated marginal side edge thereof.
11. A clip according to claim 10 including means for retaining said spring elements in position within said wings and said body portion.
12. A clip according to claim 10 including a longitudinally extending flange adjacent each marginal side edge of said clip.
13. A clip according to claim 10 wherein said spring means include substantially triangular-shaped spring elements.
14. A clip according to claim 10 wherein said spring means include substantially rectangular-shaped spring elements.
15. A clip according to claim 10 wherein said body spring elements extend substantially across the entire width of the body and are connected, at each end thereof, to the spring spines which interconnect the associated wing spring elements.
16. A clip according to claim 15 wherein said spring elements are substantially rectangular-shaped.
17. A clip according to claim 15 including means for retaining said elements in position within said Wings and said body portion.
18. A clip according to claim 15 including a longitudinally extending flange adjacent each marginal side edge of said clip.

Claims (1)
1. A CLIP FOR GUIDING AND TRANSPORTING THE LEADING END OF A WEB THROUGH A DRYING OR SIMILAR APPARATUS; SAID CLIP COMPRISING A LIGHTWEIGHT BODY PORTION CORRESPONDING IN WIDTH OF THE WIDTH OF SAID LEADING END, A PAIR OF MUTUALLY OPPOSED AND SUBSTANTIALLY ALIGNED WINGS, RESPECTIVELY INTEGRALLY AND HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE EDGES OF SAID BODY PORTION; AND COOPERATING SPRING MEANS LOCATED WITHIN EACH OF SAID WING AND SAID BODY PORTION AND ARRANGED SO AS TO RESILIENTLY AND RELEASABLY GRIP THE OPPOSITE MARGINAL PORTIONS OF THE LEADING END OF SAID WEB BETWEEN SAID WINGS AND SAID BODY PORTION.
