LOGGING, TONGS Filed Nov. 5, 1927 AT ORNEY Patented Oct. 22, 1929 SCHELLE MATHEWS, 013 M LOGGING TONGS Application filed November 5, 1927. Serial N This invention relates to tongs especially designed for handling heavy objects, such as logs, an object being to provide convenient means for loading heavy logs upon flat cars, or for handling logs or heavy objects in any manner, although the invention may be madein suitable sizes to adapt it for use in handling various other objects.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of tongs having novel means for holding them in engaged position, with the weight of the object being handled acting to close the tongs, while the said tongs may be readily opened as soon as the weight is relieved.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings an pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation partly broken away and shown in section, illustrating a pair of tongs constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corre- SO sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a pair of oppositely located hooks, the shanks 11 of which are pivotally secured to the opposite ends of a head 12. This head has its opposite ends recessed as at 13 to receive the ends of the hooks and the latter are mounted upon pivot pins 14. The head is provided with a central opening 15 and passing through this opening is a cable 16. The ends of the cable are looped beneath lugs 17 which extend from the shanks 11 of the hooks and are held in place by means of studs 18 which bridge the space between the lugs and the shanks 11. The cable is thus held in place in a manner to permit of its convenient removal.
The cable extends through the opening 15 which provides a guide for said cable and is formed with a loop 19 which extends beyond the head and which has passing therethrough 5a a cable engaging member 20. This member looped cable,
may be of provided is rotatably mounted a preferably NTESANO, WASHINGTON any suitable type, but is preferably with spaced cars 21 between which grooved roller 22 around which the loop 19 extends.
As illustrated in the drawings,
double so that a each of the lugs 1 tends around the the cable is loop is provided beneath 7 while a double loop expulley 22. However, a
single loop may passaround the pulley with the opposite ends of the cable looped and secured beneath the lug 17.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the weight of a log or other object being handled will act to hold the tongs engaged with the log due to the arrangement of the cable 16. will be taken up Also, the majority of the strain by this cable so that the tongs may be constructed of a lighter material without reducing ficiency.
their strength or ef- The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is pair of tongs comprising a head, op-
positely located hooks pivotally mounted in the head, a vlooped cable having its loop portion extending beyond the head, lugs extending from the shank *s of the hooks and having their outer ends spaced from said hooks for engagement by the opposite ends means carried by the lugs to of the hold the cable engaged with the lugs, and a cable attaching member extending through the loop of the cable.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
SCHELLE MATHEWS.
