MARKING DEVICE.
EI ECZPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,154, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed May 27, 1385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Sampson H. BROWN, a
, citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leesville, in the county of Gonzales and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Marking Goods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device for marking goods. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device inserted into a bolt of goods, and Fig. 8 is a crosssection on line .1 0c in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for marking goods with the price, quality, or any other mark, and is more especially adapted for use on dry goods which come in rolls or bolts.
It consists in the device which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
This device consists of an arm or finger, A, which may be made of wood, metal, or any other suitable material, and of any desired length and width. By preference this arm is gradually reduced in width and thickness toward one end, so as to form a tapering end, B, adapted to be inserted into the middle part of the bolt of goods (shown at G) from either of its ends. This tapering part B has a rearwardly-projecting hook, D, which will engage the cloth of the bolt, so as to prevent the device from being drawn out after it has been once inserted; and, by
preference, I make this hook yielding, so
(No model.)
' is bent and secured a single strip, G, of any suitable material, the edges of which extend inwardly on both sides of the tag E, so as to form on both sides thereof the bottom and side flanges, F, adapted to receive and hold the markingcards H, one on each side, these cards being simply pieces of stiff paper or cardboard of suitable thickness and cut to such a size that they will fit the grooves F, and it is proposed to sell a suitable number of cards wit-h each device.
Instead of using the removable markingcards H, the hinged flap or tag E may be coated on both sides with a slate composition, or the tag itself may be made of slate, or white stoneware, to adapt it to be marked or written on with pencil, so that the marks may be erased and others substituted as may be desired.
The convenience of this marking device will be too obvious to all merchants handling dry goods to require much explanation. As it is inserted into the center of the bolt, it will remain there until the entire piece has been used up or sold. It cannot become lost or accidentally detached, and the cards may readily be changed, reversed, or renewed, as occasion may require, without removing the device from the piece of goods to which it is attached.
I am aware that marking devices have been heretofore constructed comprising an arm or bar adapted to enter between the folds of the fabric and provided with means for holding the arm or bar in place, such as a barb or hook, the bar being provided at its outer end with a hinged tag; and I am also aware that tags have been heretofore constructed consisting of a casing provided on one of its sides with flanges adapted to receive and retain a suitable marking-card; and I do not, therefore, claim such construction, broadly; but
VhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
The herein i described improved marking device, the same consisting of an arm adapted to be inserted between the folds of a fabric and provided with means for holding it fixed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as in its position after it has been inserted my ownIhave hereunto affixed my signature [0 and having hinged totitgsl outeg end the tazgl in presence of two Witnesses.
