JOHN IDUG'AN, 0F HARTINGTON, NEBRASKA.
MEASURE-INDIGATING- DEVICE FOR BOLTS 0F CLOTH OR SIMILAR FABRICS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13,1914.
Application filed September 6, 1912. Serial No. 718,933.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN DUGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartington, in the county of Cedar and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measure-Indicating Devices for Bolts of Cloth or Similar Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a measure-indieating device for bolts of cloth, ribbon or the like and has for its object to provide a convenient article arranged to accompany strips of ribbon, cloth or similar merchandise contained in rolls or bolts and usually sold or retailed by the yard.
The device is particularly useful when taking an inventory of stock, the number of yards remaining in the bolt being readily known without the work and delay usually occasioned by unrolling the bolt. Also its use is of great advantage at the time the goods are sold at retail, since the use of a yard-stick or other device for measuring is not necessary.
The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed and as illustrated in the drawing, it being understood that the changes in form, size, proportion and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse section on line 11 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a bolt of cloth or other fabric partly unrolled and with the measure-indicating device applied thereto.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, the numeral 7 indicates a bolt or roll of cloth, the fabric of the bolt being indicated at 8. \Vhile the roll of cloth is used for convenience, it will be understood that the device is for use in connection with ribbon, lace, embroideries, or
any of the flat fabrics contained in rolls or bolts and usually sold by the yard.
The measure-indicating device is rolled with the fabric and comprises the central strip 9, the side strips 0 which are bent around the edges of the fabric at e and form pockets for the reception of the edges of the fabric to prevent said edges from becoming frayed or soiled, and transverse strips d which connect the portions 9' and c and hold the pocket forming members 0 and c in proper relation and against transverse movement with relation to the fabric. The central strip 9 bears at uniform longitudinal intervals in one direction, consecutivenumerical characters 10 to indicate yards and for the purpose of indicating yards in an opposite direction, it bears numerical characters 11, said characters 11 being consecutive and in inverse order to the characters 10. The layer between the limits of each yard may bear transverse lines 12 to indicate fractional parts of a yard as well as characters to indicate half yards.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A measure indicating device for bolts of fabric comprising a flexible, non-elastic, elongated layer, consisting of a middle strip, a pair of U-shaped side strips extending parallel with said middle layer and embracing the opposite edges of said fabric and transverse strips spaced along the aforesaid middle strip and connecting said strip at intervals with one edge of each of said U- shaped strips, one side of the middle strip bearing at uniform intervals, a plurality of inversely arranged numerical characters indicating units of length.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DUGAN.
IVitnesses:
