:Caricato PATENT FREDRIO JOHN BANOROFT, OF PAVVTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 324,803, dated August 25, 1885.
Application led Fehruaiy Q6, 1865.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDRIC J. BANoRoFr, of Pawtucket,I in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.
This invention relates to a clamp for the use of cabinet-makers, piano-makers, carpenters, Ste.; and it consists in providing the tail-block of the clamp with a spring located withinand protected by the block, whieh spring operates upon the clamp-iron pivoted to said block, to hold the iron in the grooves on the bar of the clamp, and the said block in proper position thereon, as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents in perspective a clamp embodying the invention. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section of the tailblock and a portion of the bar. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the same.
A is the bar of the elamp, which is provided on its under side withk the usual series of grooves, (t, and at one end with a head-block, B, furnished with a clamp-screw, C. D is the tail-block, to which is pivoted the clamp-iron E. This iron passes down the sides of the bar A and under the same, to engage the grooves a.
F is a spiral spring, which is located within a cavity, el, in the tail-block, and bears at one end upon said block, and at the other end upon a pin or cross-bar, e, passing through a transverse slot or hole, d', in the tail-block,
and secured at :its ends to the arms of the clamp-iron E below the pivoted points of said iron.
The pressure ofthe springF upon the clampiron and the tailbloek holds the former in the grooves a and retains the latter in position on the bar under all circumstances, so that when the clamp is used the block and iron need not be held in position by hand, as is necessary n clam ps of ordinary construction.
The spring F, being located within the tailbloek, is protected from damage, is notin the way ofthe work man, and cannot become fouled with glue, as would be liable to be the ease were it located exteriorly upon the block.
W'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improved clamp herein described, consisting of the grooved bar A, head block B, clamp-screw O, tail-block D, pivoted clampiron E, and spring F, located within and protected by the tail-block, and bearing upon the same and upon the elamp-iron, to hold them in position upon the bar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the tail-block D, having a spring-cavity, d, and transverse slot or hole d', the pivoted clamp-iron E, provided with apiu or cross-bar e, and the spring F, located within and protected by the tail-block, and bearing upon the same and the clamp-iron, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
