POWDER PUFF. No. 324,800. Patented Aug. 25, 1885,

BY dLl/(A/M M/ i? ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT OFricE.
JAMES C. AUSTIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POWDER-PUFF.
1PECIFICATI0N forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,800, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed May 24, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES C. AUsTIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ladies Powder-Puff, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide a cheap yet convenient and attractive powder-puff, designed for holding and applying face-powder; and the invention consists of a handle, cover, puff, and powderreceptacle combined in one part or piece, the same being adapted to fit into a suitable bottom, box, or receptacle, the powder being confined in the hollow handle or powder receptacle by a covering of material suitable for rubbing the powder upon the skin.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my new and improved powder-puff, the puff proper being shown out of the bottom or receptacle for the puff; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the puff, showing the puff proper in place in its receptacle.
A represents the puff proper, and B represents the bottom, box, or receptacle therefor. The puff A is by preference made of wood, turned with the handle a, flange b, and shoulder or offset a, which rests upon'the upper edge of the box 13 when the puff A is placed therein. The flange 1) is chambered out to form the cavity or receptacle d for powder, and said flange is reduced in diameter, as shown at e, and has the circumferential groove f formed in it near its lower edge, in which (No morlc.)
groove the covering 0 for the powder-receptacle d is tied by the wire or string 9. (Shown clearly in Fig. 1.) The covering 0 is by preferenee made of chainoisskin or other soft material, and is perforated with numerous holes, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, to permit the escape of the powder held in the powder-receptacle d.
Constructed in the manner described, by lifting the part A and applying the covering 0 to the face a constant supply of powder will be given off without the necessity of dipping the puff back into the powder, as with ordinary puff-boxes, and the puff being received back into the box B when not in use preserves and prevents the powder from scattering, so that the puff as a whole is very practical and convenient, and may be made very cheap and handsome in appearance.
Having thus described my inventionl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A powder-puff formed with the handle and powder-receptacle in one piece, the receptacle being closed by a soft covering through which the powder is adapted to pass, substantially as described.
2. The powder-puff herein shown and described, consisting of the puff proper, A, and the box, bottom, or receptacle B for receiving the puff A, the latter being formed with the handle a, powder-receptacle d in one piece, closed by the covering 0, substantially as set forth.
JAS. O. AUSTIN.
