WILLIAM DELANO, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.324,460, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed June 27, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DELANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shutter-fasteners, and is especially designed for use on iron shutters which are fastened by means of an interior pivoted bar.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and improved means by which the shutters can be opened from the outside in case of fire or accident.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an interior elevation showing the fastening attached. Fig. 2 is an exterior elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view in detail; Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the protecton.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by'the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the shutters, which are provided with a transverse fastening-bar, B, of suitable construction, as shown in Fig. 1, and with the usual angular brackets, 12 b, for engaging said bar.
0 designates a pin, which passes through one of the shutters, A, near its edge, the inner end of said pin being securely fastened to and forming a bearing for the bar B. The
outer end of the pin 0 is provided with a knob or handle, 0, by means of which the shutters may be operated in case of fire or accident. Around the pin 0, and inclosing the knob c, is provided a plate or casing, which may be of any suitable mat-erial,and is preferably of circular form, and is adapted as a protector to the knob 0. Extensions E are provided at the edges of the casing D, having eyes (I, for the passage of screws or other devices, by
'tion will be readily uuderstood'by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. Normally the bar B is operated from the inside in the usual manner. In case of fire or accident the casing D can be readily broken off by a blow of an ax, thus exposing the knob and enabling the shutter to be quickly opened. It is obvious that by this device shutters can be quickly and easily opened from the outside without the loss oftime heretofore occasioned by the necessity of breaking through the shutters in case of fire or accident, and it will readily be seen that the danger and loss of life frequently occasioned by the delayin opening the shutters are entirely obviated.
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. The combination, in fastening devices of the class described, of a knob projecting outside and a permanent casing inclosing the knob, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a shutter-fastener comprising a transverse pivoted bar adapted to be operated from the inside, of a knob connected with the outer end of the pivot of the bar and a casing inclosing said knob, sub' stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DELANO.
