To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MORRIS P. BRAY, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new 1111- provement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of corsets, with special reference to that class which are cut away at thelower edge to set over the hip. This class of corsets have been constructed with a band extending from the front up over the hip and down to the back, the band itself being stayed by a series of cords or like stays extending parallel with the lower edge of the corset. Owing to the great variation in the projection of hips, it is difficult to construct the corset so that the band will fit more than one hip; hence such a construction of corset is not popular with the trade. The band from the hip to thefront and from the hip to the back forms a desirable stay, and gives the requisite rounding shape from the hip to the front and back; but owing to the difficulties before mentioncd, but comparatively few ladies can wear such corsets as they are made for the market.

The object of my invention is to construct a corset which shall have the stayed band at the lower edge from the hip to the back, but the corset at the hip constructed so as to adapt itself to the varying shapes of hips; and my invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claim.

A represents the front or clasp edge, and B the eyelet or rear edge; C, the hip-section; D, the front section, and E the roar section. The

hip-section extends from the top to the bottom of the corset, and is introduced between the front and back sections in the usual manner, its edge being secured to those sections. At the bottom of the front section, D, is a band, F, having a series of s ays parallel with the lower edge of that section, and extending from the front or clasp portion to the hipsection, and at the bottom of the back section, E, is a like band, G, extending from the eyelet-strip B to the hip-section, and provided with a se ries of stays, also parallel with the bottom of that section, as shown. At the bottom of the hip-section a gore-shaped portion is cut out, and into the space an elastic gore, H, is introduced, its edges secured in the edges of the opening in the hip-section. The introduction of the elastic gore into the hipsection preserves the hip'section in connection with the stays at the bottom of the front and rear sections, simply allowing that section to expand or contract to adapt itself to the hip of the wearer, and form substantially a continuation of the stayed bands, so far as the effect or set of the corset from the hips forward and back over the hips is concerned.

From the foregoing it will be understood that I do not claim, broadly, a stayed band following the line of the bottom of the corset from front to rear; neither do Ielaini, broadly, the introduction of an elastic gore into the lower edge of the corset; but

iVhat I do claim is A corset having the lower edge cut away over the hips from front to the rear, the hipsection C,having a portion cutfrom its lower end, and the elastic gore H,introduced therein, secured by its edges to the edges of the opening in the hip-section, the band F, extending from the front up to the hip section, and having stays parallel with the lower edge of that section, and the back section, E, having a band, G, at its lower edge, with a series of stays parallel with the lower edge of that section, said band extending from the back to the hip section, substantially as described.
