MAX ADLER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MAYER,
STBOUSE & CO., OF SAME -PLACE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,511, dated July 19, 1881. Application filed May 31, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom @t may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX ADLER, of. New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in- Y Figurel, aside view of the lower part of the hip-section, to which thisinvention particularly relates; Fig.`2, a section on line w w; Fig. 3, a section on l'ine z z.
This invent-ion relates to an improvement in that class of corsets which are provided with means for giving an elasticity to the corset upon the hips. In some cases elasticgores have been introduced at the hip for this purpose. The necessary yielding at the lower edge of the corset is much greater in proportion than it is a short distance above; hence if an elastic gore be introduced it must be very broad, so as to cover a large surface, in order that the requisite yielding at the lower edge may be attained, in which case the gore is a discomfort to the wearer because of the heatk ing at the bottom. This construction is uncomfortable for the wearer, because of the strain on the elastic strip at the bottom, leaving an open space above, which presents no bearing upon the hip.
The object of this invention is to overcome these difficulties; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
A represents the front, and B the rear part, of the hip-section, cut so as to leave a goreshaped space between them at the lower edge. Vertically down the side of the corset over this space is a stay or strip, C. From each side the opening to the stay a strip of elastic material, D, is introduced. This strip may extend from the rear edge of the front part to the forward edge of the rear part without the intervention of the strip C 3 but I prefer that strip.
Y E E( are two gore-shaped pieces, each narrower than the cut-away part of the front and rear sections, but attached, respectively, to the edges of the said parts A B and so as to extend down over the elastic strip D, as seen in Fig. 2.
Between the rear edge of the gore-piece E and the forward edge of the strip C is a narrow strip, F, of elastic material, and between .the forward edge of the rear gore-piece, E',
single piece between the adjacent edges of the gores E E. The gores E E are, preferably,
`provided with the usual bones or stays.
By this construction the long strip D yields to the great varying strain at that point, the same as if it were an elastic gore extending from the lower edge upward to the apex of the gore. Thenarrower gore or gore-pieces F F are sufficient for the adjustability above the lower edge, and occupy very much less space than would a complete elastic gore.`
By the combined gore-pieces E and E', with the intermediate elastic material and the long elastic strips D, the requisite elasticityyield ing, or adjustability is given to the hip-sectionv and the uncomfortable opening or great extent of elastic material is avoided, the corset is more durable than in either case, and far more comfortable to the wearer.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I do not broadly claim the introduction of elastic gores or material at the hip-section, and that, while I prefer the vertical intermediate strip or stay, C, it is not essential to the invention; but
What I do claim is- 1. In a corset, the gore-pieces E E', introi duced between the front and rear partsof vthe hip-section, combined with narrow elastic maelastic material between said gore-pieces and 1o said central strip, and an elastic connection below, between said central strip or stay and the front and rear parts of said section, substantially as described.
