THOMAS A. NELSON, OF BIRMINGHAM,-CONNEOTIOUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BASSETTS CORSET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,241, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed August 23, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. NELSON, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and Ido hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a front view.
This invention relates to an improvementin corsets, with special reference to the method of staying hip'sections; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the rear section, and B the front. The section between the front and rear is the hip-section. From the rear section toward the front, but turning downward so as to terminate at the lower edge of the corset, is a series of stays, C. At the top is a series of stays, D, running from the rear section forward toward the front section, but terminating at the upper edge, the stays of the two sections curved, as shown. Between the said upper and lower sections is a series of vertical stays, E. The curved stays at the upper end more readily yield to the movement of the body than the usual form or method of staying.
Preferably, the stays in the section E are made from cords or other material which will stays running from the rear section forward and downward, as such, I am aware, is not new.
I am aware that corsets have heretofore been made in which a diagonal series of bones has been arranged in the hip-section, combined with a vertical series. I therefore do not broadly claim such construction; but
What I do claim is- A corset having in its side or hip section the series of stays 0, running from the rear section forward and downward, and curved to terminateat the lower edge of the corset, the series of stays D at the top running from the rear section forward and curved upward to terminate at the upper edge, combined with 'the vertical series of stays E between the said two curved series.
THOS. A. NELSON. Witnesses JAcoB D. BREWSTER, WM. S. BROWNE.
