(Cl. 285) This invention comprises a novel and useful Hollywood bed frame and more particularly pertains to a sturdy but compactly folda'ble bed frame assembly.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a Hollywood bed frame assembly of an extremely sturdy and enduring construction and yet which may be easily assembled or disassembled and when disassembled may be compactly folded into a minimum volume for economical storage or transportation.
An important object of the invention is to provide a Hollywood bed frame which shall be capable of interchangeable use with wide or narrow headboards providing an adjustable width frame equally adaptable for single or kingsize beds.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a sturdy yet simplified construction for joining the side and end rails and corner posts of a bed frame in an advantageous manner.
Still another important object of the invention in accordance with the preceding objects is to provide a locking means for releasably securing the side and end rails in their assembled relation.
A further object of the invention in accordance with the above-mentioned objects is to provide a construction of a bed frame which will allow the longitudinally extensible end rail sections of the frame to be folded back against and nested within the side rails thereof.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a Hollywood bed frame in accordance with this invention and showing a headboard mounted thereon;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of one side rail and a part of the two end rails of a bed frame in accordance with the invention;

In the accompanying drawings the principles of this invention specifically relates, longitudinally extensible an frame of the usual rectangular configuration. The bed frame includes angle iron members forming side and end rails, a support post assembly therefor and a reversible bracket means for mounting a headboard of different widths depending on whether the device is to be used for a relatively narrow width headboard for a single bed or a wider headboard for a double or kingsize bed.
In the Hollywood bed construction to which this invention specifically relates, longitudinally extensible and adjustable end rails each consist of a pair of sections which are individually pivoted to the end of an associated side rail whereby the end rail sections may be disposed in alignment transversely of the frame and adjustable with respect to each other to obtain a bed frame of a variable and adjusted width. When the sections of the end rails are disconnected from each other, they may be folded back against their respective side rails in a nested relationship in order to obtain a very compact disposition of the end and side rails of the frame for economical transportation or storage. Each of the side rails carries a reversible mounting bracket at the head end thereof for mounting the headboard thereon. The bed frame may be thus later-ally adjusted to accommodate headboards of different widths in order that the same frame may function selectively as a part of a single bed, a double bed or a kingsize bed.
A first embodiment in accordance with this invention is illustrated in FIGURES 1-6 and a second embodiment is shown in FIGURES 7-9. These embodiments differ from each other solely in the construction of a specific locking means by which the end rail sections are releasably locked or retained in their extended or laterally projecting positions with respect to the side rails.
Referring now primarily to the first embodiment of FIGURES 1-6 it will be seen that a portion of the Hollywood bed frame is indicated generally bythe numeral 10 and has a headboard 12 mounted thereon which may be of the single bed size, the double bed size of a kingsize being accommodated upon the same bed frame 10 of adjustable width.
The bed frame is of rectangular configuration including metallic angle members comprising a pair of side rails 14 together with a pair of end rails 16. It will be observed that each of these rails includes a horizontal top flange together with a vertical flange depending from the outer edge of the top flange. Thus, the side rails 14 have horizontal top flanges 1'8 and vertical flanges 20 while the end rails 16 have corresponding horizontal top flanges 22 and vertical side flanges 24 depending from the outer edges of the top flanges.
It will be noted that secured to and rising from the top flanges 18 of the side rails are upstanding L-shaped brackets as at 26 which serve to retain a bed spring, not shown, in proper position upon the horizontal flange of the side rails. This construction overcomes the disadvantage rising from the use of upstanding vertical flanges on the edges of the horizontal flanges which prevent free access to the edges of the springs and mattress of the bed.
At the outer edges of what may be termed the head end of the bed frame there are provided pairs of outwardly projecting headed pins or fasteners 28 upon the vertical flanges 18 of the side rails. These flanges detachably reoeive headboard mounting brackets indicated generally by the numeral 30 and of the construction shown best in FIGURE 6. These mounting brackets consist of L- shaped members having mutually perpendicular vertically extending longitudinal and transverse flanges 32 and 34. The flange 32 tapers in width from its junction with the flange 34 and is provided with a pair of keyhole slots as at 36 cooperating with the headed fasteners 28 to detachably secure and apply or remove the mounting bracket from the exterior surface of the side rails. A further longitudinally elongated slot 38 is provided which may receive a fastener extending through a corresponding aperture in the side rail to further lock the flange against accidental removal.
The transverse flange 34 is rectangular in shape and provided with a pair of transversely elongated slots as at 40. These slots are are adapted to receive fasteners such as those indicated at 42 and by which the headboard 12 is secured to the mounting bracket for application to or removal from the side rails by removal of the mounting brackets therefrom.
It should be here noted that the transverse flanges 34 may be either turned inwardly between the side rails as shown in FIGURES 1 and or may be turned outwardly therefrom when it is desired to accommodate the larger size of headboard. Further accommodation of different width headboards is permitted by the adjustment of the end rail to thereby adjust the width of the bed frame.
To effect this latter purpose, it will be observed that each of the end rails 16, see FIGURE 1 in particular, consists of a pair of end rail sections as at 50 and 52 and which are likewise of L-shaped configuration, as previously mentioned. An adjustable fastening means such as a strap 54 encircles the overlapping portion of the sections 50 and 52 of each end rail 16 in order to adjustably lock the latter in adjustable longitudinally extended positions and thus obtain a desired Width between the two side rails.
Reference is now made specifically to FIGURES 3, 4 and 6 for an understanding of a corner post construction which forms a very important feature of this invention.
A corner post consisting of a metallic post or standard 56 is provided for each corner of the bed. This post is L- shaped in configuration consisting of two mutually perpendicular vertical flanges 58 and 60 which at the lower end may be provided with integral sleeves 62 for the reception of a shank 64 of a foot member 66. One of the flanges as for example the flange 58 is provided with a vertical notch 68 extending downwardly from its upper edge, while the upper edge of this flange is outturned horizontally to provide a horizontal flange as at 78 which is apertured as at 72. The other flange 60 is provided with a pair of apertures as at 74. As so far described, this post 56 is preferably of one piece construction with the upper edges of the flanges 60 and 70 being coplanar in a horizontal plane.
Secured to the exterior surface of the flange 60 is a brace in the form of an L-shaped bracket indicated generally by the numeral 76. This bracket includes a horizontal flange 78 together with a vertical flange 80. The bracket is of the same length as the distance from the outer edge of the flange 60 to the opposite edge of the flange 70, with the vertical edge 80 of the brace 76 being disposed in sideby-side engagement upon the vertical flange 60 and having apertures, not shown, but aligned with the apertures 74.
As will be observed from FIGURES 3, 4 and 6, the horizontal plane of the top surface of the brace 78 is slightly above the horiozntal plane of the horizontal flange 70 and a spacing washer 82 is provided upon the top of the latter. At its end adjacent the aperture 72, the horizontal flange 7 8 of the brace is provided with a cutout portion as at 84 from which is upwardly struck a tab 86 comprising a locking means.
Received in the slot 68 is the flange 24 of the adjacent section 50 or 52 of an end rail 16. This end rail section has a pair of apertures 88 which register with the previously mentioned apertures 74 so that common fasteners such as rivets or the like, as shown at 90 may simultanously secure the end rail section, the brace and the flange 60 of the support port 56 in a rigid relationship. In this arrangement, the horizontal flange 22 of the end rail section will overlie and rest upon the top flange 70 of the support post and has an aperture as at 92 registering both with the aperture 72 of the flange 80 and with a further aperture 94 adjacent the end of the side rail 14. A fastener such as a bolt or rivet 96 extends through the aperture 94 in the side rail, the spacer washer 82, then through the aperture 92 of the end rail and finally through the aperture 72 of the flange 70 of the support post to thereby pivot the support post and the attached end rail section to the side rail for horizontal swinging movement.
The pivotal relationship is such that the end rails may be swung between an extended position perpendicular to and transversely of the side rails as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2 to a folded, retracted or closed position in which they are nested against the side rails in overlapping relation as shown in FIGURE 5.
When the end rail section and its support post are pivoted into the transverse or extended or open position, as shown in FIGURE 3, the tab 86 will lie above the horizontal flange 18 of the side rail 14 and thereby limit pivoting movement of the end rail section relative to the side rail and will releasably and frictionally lock the end rail section in its open or extended position.
It is to be particularly noted that the pivotal connection of the end rail section and its support post assembly is disposed inwardly from the end of the side rail 18 and with the support post assembly being also disposed laterally inwardly from the vertical wall or flange 18 of the side rail.
There is thus provided an exceptionally sturdy construction in which the support post assembly securely receives and mounts the end rail section thereon and in turn securely receives and mounts the side rail assembly pivotally thereon.
Further, the outwardly turned flange 70 provides the initial thickness of material at the pivotal connection of the end rail section with the side rail further strengthening and rigidifying this construction while the brace 76 likewise laterally stiffens and strengthens the end portion of the side rail at its connection to and has locking engagement with the side rail.
Reference is now made to the second form of the support post assembly and locking means shown in FIG- URES 7-9. Inasmuch as this modified construction is applied to the same elements as that of the preceding form, the same reference numerals have been applied to designate the support post, the end rail sections and the side rail. However, the brace, indicated generally by the numeral 100, although similar in construction to the brace 76, having a horizontal flange 102 and a vertical flange 104, in lieu of the tab 86 is provided with an upstanding headed locking pin 106. The latter cooperates with a locking notch 108 provided in the horizontal flange 18 of the adjacent associated side rail 14. The mounting of the end rail section upon the support post 56 of this form of the invention is identical to that previously described as is the connection of the combined end rail section and support post to the side rail.
It will thus be apparent that there has been provided an exceptionally sturdy bed frame assembly especially adapted for use with Hollywood beds and which will accommodate headboards of different widths and springs and mattresses of different widths, while affording the advantage of being collapsible into a very small volume for economy and storage and transportation.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A Hollywood bed frame having a rectangular shape and being composed of a pair of side rails and a pair of end rails, each end rail having its opposite ends pivotally connected to both of said side rails at one end thereof, each end rail including a pair of aligned, separable and longitudinally extensible and adjustable sections, each section being pivoted for horizontal swinging movement between a folded position in side-by-side relation to its side rail and an extended position projecting laterally from its side rail and toward the other side rail, a locking means engaging each rail section and the associated side rail end and releasably locking said section to its side rail in said extended position, and a pair of headboard mounting brackets each removably secured to one end of a side rail, each bracket including mutually perpendicular vertical longitudinal and transverse flanges, relatively movable interlocking means quickly detachably and reversibly securing said longitudinal flange upon the end portion of a side rail, said transverse flange being selectively positioned inwardly or outwardly from the associated side rail whereby to accommodate selectively a narrow or wide headboard.
2. A rail and leg assembly for a Hollywood bed frame of the rectangular-shaped type including longitudinal side rails and transverse end rails each having horizontal and vertical flanges, said assembly comprising a corner post of L-shaped cross section consisting of mutually perpendicular vertical flanges, a vertical notch in the upper edge of one flange at the juncture of said post vertical flanges and receiving the vertical flange of an end rail thereon, and a horizontal outwardly extending flange at the upper end of said post supporting the horizontal flange of said end rail, fastening means securing said horizontal flanges of said post and end rail to the horizontal flange of a side rail.
3. The combination of claim 2 including fasteners rigidly securing the other vertical flange of said post against the outer surface of said end rail vertical flange.
4. The combination of claim 3 including a brace comprising horizontal and vertical flanges, said brace vertical flange being secured rigidly against the other vertical flange of said post opposite to the end rail vertical flange by said fasteners, said brace horizontal flange closely underlying said side rail horizontal flange.
5. The combination of claim 4 including releasable locking means cooperating with said post and side rail and securing the post and end rail in fixed relation to said side rail and with said end rail substanttially perpendicular to said side rail.
6. The combination of claim 5 wherein said locking means comprises a projection extending above said corner post and end rail and engaging a portion of the side rail horizontal flange in spaced relation to said fastening means.
7. The combination of claim 6 wherein said projection comprises an upwardly struck laterally projecting tab on said brace horizontal flange.
8. The combination of claim 6 wherein said projection comprises a headed pin on the brace horizontal flange engaging in a slot in said side rail marginal flange.
9. In a bed assembly having a side rail with a vertical flange and a headboard extending generally perpendicular to the side rail, a headboard mounting bracket adapted to detachably interconnect the side rail and headboard, said bracket including mutually perpendicular vertical longitudinal and transverse flanges, said transverse flange having means incorporated thereon for attachment to a headboard, said longitudinal flange having means incorporated therewith for quick detachable engagement with the vertical flange of the side rail, said means on the longitudinal flange of the bracket including one portion of locking means for rigidly connecting the longitudinal flange of the bracket to the vertical flange of the side rail in response to relative movement of the longitudinal flange on the bracket in relation to the side rail.
10. The structure as defined in claim 9 wherein said means on the longitudinal flange includes a pair of keyhole shaped openings adapted to receive headed fasteners on the vertical flange of the side rail for interlocking engagement therewith upon initial lateral movement of the headed fasteners through the keyhole openings and then longitudinal relative movement therebetween, the
leg portions of said keyhole openings converging for rigid engagement with the headed fasteners.
11. The structure as defined in claim 10 wherein said longitudinal flange on the bracket includes an aperture independent of the keyhole openings for receiving an anchoring fastener to retain the bracket in interlocked relation to the side rail.
12. A Hollywood bed assembly comprising a side rail and an attaching bracket for a headboard, said bracket including mutually perpendicular longitudinal and transverse flanges, said transverse flange adapted to be connected to a headboard, and said longitudinal flange including interlocking means responsive to relative move ment between the longitudinal flange and a side rail for quickly attaching and detaching the bracket in relation to a side rail.
13. The combination as defined in claim 12 wherein the interlocking means between the side rail and longitudinal flange includes headed fasteners fixed to the side rail, said bracket including a pair of keyhole slots therein with the legs of the slots defined by converging edges for rigid engagement with the headed fasteners, and a fastener extending through the side rail and longitudinal flange independent of the headed fasteners for retaining the bracket locked to the side rail.
14. In a Hollywood bed having a side rail and end rail, a corner post comprising a pair of vertical flanges orientated in substantially perpendicular relation to each other, the upper end of one of said vertical flanges having a horizontally outwardly extending flange adapted to extend under and be pivotally connected with a horizontal flange of a side rail, said post having a vertical notch extending from the upper edge thereof downwardly at the juncture between said vertical flanges forming the post for receiving a vertical flange of an end rail when a horizontal flange of an end rail is disposed on top of the horizontally outwardly extending flange at the upper end of one of the vertical flanges defining said post for enabling the end rail to be sandwiched between the horizontally extending flange on the post and a horizontal flange of the side rail for connection of the side rail, end rail and horizontally outwardly extending flange on the post together with a common fastener element.
15. The corner post assembly as defined in claim 14 together with a brace attached to the outer surface of the other vertical flange defining said post, said brace being of L-shaped configuration with the vertical flange thereof disposed against the vertical flange defining the post and adapted to be disposed in parallel relation to the vertical flange of the end rail, the horizontal flange of the brace adapted to extend under a horizontal flange of a side rail, and means projecting upwardly from the horizontal flange of the brace for interlocking engagement with a horizontal flange of a side rail when the brace is orientated in substantially perpendicular relation to a side rail.

Claims (1)

1. A HOLLYWOOD BED FRAME HAVING A RECTANGULAR SHAPED AND BEING COMPOSED OF A PAIR OF SAID RAILS AND A PAIR OF END RAILS, EAHC END RAIL HAVING ITS OPPOSITE ENDS PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO BOTH OF SAID SIDE RAILS AT ONE END THEREOF, EACH END RAIL INCLUDING A PAIR OF ALIGNED, SEPARABLE AND LONGITUDINALLY EXTENSIBLE AND ADJUSTABLE SECTIONS, EACH SECTION BENIG PIVOTED FOR HORIZONTAL SWINGING MOVEMENT BETWEEN A FOLDED POSITON IN SIDE-BY-SIDE RELATION TO ITS SIDE RAIL AND AN EXTENDED POSITION PROJECTING LATERALLY FROM ITS SIDE RAIL AND TOWARD THE OTHER SIDE RAIL, A LOCKING MEANS ENGAGING EACH RAIL SECTION AND THE ASSOCIATED SIDE RAIL END AND RELEASABLY LOCKING SAID SECTION TO ITS SIDE RAIL
