The present invention is concerned with bedroom furniture and more particularly with a multiple-decker bed and chest unit.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a bed having at least three decks with a chest of drawers and ladders included and which bed requires a minimum of space being particularly adaptable for fitting into small rooms and particularly a corner of a room and yet will be comfortable and safe for the occupants thereof.
A further and important object of the invention is to provide a multiple-decker bed that can be easily and readily separated for convenience in making up the beds, that is, putting sheets and blankets thereon, and reconnected as desired.
Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective front view of the present multiple-decker bed;
FIG. 2 is a perspective end view of the multiple-decker bed;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged exploded perspective partial view of the connecting elements between portions of the bed;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of an end portion of the middle deck of the bed; and
FIG. 5 is a further enlarged detailed cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings in which like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, the present multiple decker bed has end posts 1 and 2 connected adjacent their bottom ends by an end board 3 and also thereabove by spaced-apart cross-bars 4. Uprights 5 interconnect said cross-bars and have a series of rungs 6 connecting said uprights providing a ladder.
A further pair of end posts 7 and 8 are connected adjacent their bottom ends by end board 9 and also thereabove by spaced-apart cross-bars 10. Uprights 11 interconnect cross-bars and a series of runs 12 connect said uprights 11 providing a second ladder.
A pair of side boards 13 and 14 of which only 13 is shown, connects posts 1 and 2 to posts 7 and 8 adjacent the top ends of said posts providing the top deck of the bed.
A side rail 15 is hingedly connected along one edge by hinges 16 to the top of side board 13. A book 18 is attached to side rail 15 for engaging eye 19 on post 7 to hold said side rail up as shown in FIG. 2. A combination inner spring and box spring mattress 17 is supported on said side boards 13 and 14.
A pair of side boards 20, of which only one is shown, connects posts 1 and 2 to posts 7 and 8 adjacent the bottom ends of said posts providing the bottom deck of the bed.
A side rail 21 is hingedly connected by hinges 24 to the top of side board and has a hook 22 for engaging eye 23 fixed to post 2 for holding said side rail 21 up as shown in FIG. 2. A combination inner spring and boxspring mattress 25 is supported on said side boards 20.
A combination middle deck and chest of drawers generally indicated at 26 has a chest end 27, front 28 in which are slideably mounted drawers 29 and a back 30 and casters 31 supporting the same.
End posts 32 and 33 are fixedly mounted on chest end 27 and support a head board 34. A side rail 35 is hingedly connected by hinges 36 to the top of a side board 37, and has a hook 35a for engaging an eye not shown on post 32 for retaining said rail upright as seen in FIG. 2. Said side board 37 is fixedly mounted on and extends beyond the chest front 28 while a second side board 38 is fixedly mounted on and extends beyond said chest back 30 and said side boards 37 and 38 are connected at their extended end by an end board 39 providing the middle deck of the bed.
A combination inner spring and boxspring mattress 40 is supported on said side rails 37 and 38.
Side rail 38 has a spring clip 41 fastened to the top thereof by screws 42 adjacent end board 39 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. A second similar spring clip 43 is fastened to the top of said side rail 38 by screws 44 a distance from clip 41 approximately equal to the distance between T- shaped pins 45 and 46 fastened to posts 8 and 7 respectively whereby said clips 41 and 43 can be pushed over said pins 45 and 46 respectively and retain and support side board 38 on posts 7 and 8.
Post 7, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 5, has a metal plate 47 embedded therein and retained thereto by screw 48. Side board 38 has a recess 49 in which is positioned a ring magnet 50 held therein by screw 51. Said side rail further has a second magnet 53 fixedly mounted therein and post 8 has metal plate 52 fixedly mounted therein. Magnets 50 and 53 are spaced apart a distance equal to the space between plates 47 and 52.
The present multiple-decker bed can thus be used to sleep persons on mattresses 17, 25 and 40 and by pivoting side rails 15, 21 and 35 up and fastening hooks 18, 22 and 38a retain the users on said mattresses. Ladders provided by rungs 6 and 12 can be use-d to reach the top deck. Also, drawers 29 can be used as a container for various articles as desired.
When it is necessary to make up the various decks of the bed, books 18, 22 and 38a are unfastened and side rails 15, 21 and 35 lowered as shown in FIG. 1-. Also, a sharp pull on the middle deck 26 laterally of posts 7 and 8 will separate clips 41 and 43 from pins 45 and 46 as well as magnets 50 and 53 from plates 47 and 52 whereby said middle deck can be rolled on casters 31 allowing for an approach to all sides of the decks. rail 38 laterally of posts 7 and 8 will again engage clips 41 and 43 with pins 45 and 46 respectively and cause magnets 50 and 53 to attach and hold plates 47 and 52 respectively retaining middle deck 26 to the rest of the bed and supporting the outer end of rail 38.
The present multiple-decker bed can be positioned in a corner of a room and thus takes little room while accommodating at least three persons.
As shown in FIG. 6 of the drawings, the chest of drawers 26 has the middle deck resting thereon for support, but said middle deck can be raised and separated from said chest of drawers so that the chest can be used as a separate piece of furniture.
The multiple-decker bed is capable of considerable modification, and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claims are deemed to be a part of the present invention.
I claim:
1. A multiple-decker bed comprising three bed frames, two pairs of upright end posts with each pair thereof attached to opposite ends of two of said bed frames fixedly supporting the same in spaced apart superposed positions, a movable support having a portion of the third of said bed frames fixedly mounted thereon with a second portion of said third bed frame extending from said movable support between and laterally of said two of said bed frames adjacent one pair of said end posts and means detachably connecting said movable support to said one pair of said end posts.
2. A multiple-decker bed as claimed in claim 1 wherein said movable support consists of a chest of drawers having said third bed frame first portion fixedly mounted on the top thereof with said third bed frame second portion extending from a side of said chest and caster supporting said chest.
3. A multiple-decker bed as claimed in claim 1 wherein said detachable connecting means consists of at least one spring clip fixedly mounted on said third bed frame second portion and a T-shaped pin extending from a post of said one pair of said end posts for receiving or being detached from said clip upon relative lateral movement between said third bed frame and said post.
4. A multiple-decker bed as claimed in claim 1 wherein said detachable connecting means consists of at least one magnet attached to said third bed frame and a metal 4 plate attached to a post of said one pair of said end posts being detachably attached to said magnet when the second portion of said third bed frame extends later-ally of and between said two of said bed frames.

1. A MULTIPLE-DECKER BED COMPRISING THREE BED FRAMES, TWO PAIRS OF UPRIGHT END POSTS WITH EACH PAIR THEREOF ATTACHED TO OPPOSITE ENDS OF TWO OF SAID BED FRAMES FIXEDLY SUPPORTING THE SAME IN SPACED APART SUPERPOSED POSITIONS, A MOVABLE SUPPORT HAVING A PORTION OF THE THIRD OF SAID BED FRAMES FIXEDLY MOUNTED THEREON WITH A SECOND PORTION OF SAID THIRD BED FRAME EXTENDING FROM SAID MOV-
