SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,029, dated July 28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DUoKER, a citizen of the United States, residing .in the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Gutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 is aperspective view of a box containing my invention, the lid open. Fig. 2 is a broadside section through the middle of the box. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal transverse section of the box, looking from front to back, the lid in elevation,with the bottom j partially broken away. Fig. 4c is a longitudinal transdown when the box is closed; I) b, shoulders on the sides to fit within the lid and support it against lateral pressure, and a roughened part, a, for striking matches, as is customary.

In the lid of the box, to receive the end of a cigar, I form a passage, 0, which extends entirely through the lid, and is open when the lid of the box is thrown back. is formed by making corresponding holes on 0 each side of the lid of suitable size to receive the end of a cigar, and inserting and securing therein by soldering or otherwise the conical tubes d (I, one on each side, having their larger openings outward and their smaller openings inward,and close enough together to leave only,

a narrow slit, 6, between them, of a width to permit the knife f to enter, as clearly shown in Fig. at.

This passage crosses their inner openings. This knife is adjusted to move into the lid, but against the action of the springh, and its downward movement, when the box is being closed, is limited by the shoulder Z on the box, upon which the knife then rests, the width of the knife and its position relative to the passage 0 and to the shoulder Z being such that when the lid is closed the shoulder Z will support the knife across such passage, and thereby close it, and the upper edge will project above such passage and within the lid, as shown in Fig. 4.

A convenient and advantageous manner of securing the knife and lid to the box is to use narrow strips of thin metal m m, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, bend the strips back upon themselves, rounding the bent parts to inclose the I pin 9, cut-away parts of each of the rounded portions leaving coinciding projecting parts with space midway for the knife f, interlock them inhinge form by the pin 9, and rivet them to the box and lid, respectively, riveting with them to the box also the shoulderpiece Z, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This makes a strong and firm hinge-connection, and stiffens the lid and box for the strain incident to forcing theknife through the cigar.

In the lid I provide a support for the lower edge of the loose end of the knife, anda guide to keep the knife in line with the opening between the tubes d d. This is conveniently done by using a piece or bottom, j, secured within the lid, and far enough above the lower edge of the lid to permit the shoulders I) b to enter, and it may inclose the entire lid, as shown in Fig. 1. This bottom j has a slot, k, on the line on which the knife is to move, wide enough to permit the knife to move freely within it, but somewhat shorter than the knife, to provide a shoulder or rest for the loose end of the knife near the front of the lid,and retain the .knife within the lid. Near the front of the lid, I make a slot, 1*, in this bottom to receive the snap a, leaving a little projection, t,.to give a bearing to the snap to catch the lid in place when the box is closed. This bottom forms a convenient guide for the knife and a support for its loose end, and also prevents the matches slipping into the lid. The best way to attach this bottom to the lid is to provide bearing-shoulders for it to rest upon.

These shoulders may consist of the pieces 2' i, secured within the lid on each side, upon the edges of which the bottom j rests and is soldered in place.

\Vithin the lid I provide a spring, 71, of any convenient shape, to bear upon the knife and alsoupon the lid, which is adjusted to throw back the lid when the snap ais released, and also to hold the knife away from the passage 0 when the lid is thrown back, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This spring may be placed in any convenient part of the lid. I show one form made of a narrow strip of thin spring metal bent into V shape, (shown in Fig. 6 in side and in front view,) which is fitted and secured in the open space between the back of the lid and the tubes d (Z, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; or a spring, h, (shown by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3,) may be fastened to the front of the lid to bear upon the loose end of the knife, as there shown. The operation is as follows:

Vhen it is desired to use the cigar-cutter, the snap a is released, which causes the lid to fly back and holds the knife away from the opening 0. The cigar is then inserted and the lid closed down on the box, and the knife,being supported by the shoulder Z and guided by the slot 70, is forced through the cigar, cutting 05 the tip, which falls outside of the box, as shown in Fig. 4.

Whatever is shown in this application and found in my prior application No. 96, 804, filed June 1, 1883, is hereby disclaimed in this particular application.

Having thus described my invention,whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A match-box, A, provided with a shoulder, Z, a hinged lid, B, having a passage, 0, through the same, a knife,- f, and spring, ash, bearing upon said knife and lid, in combination with a bottom, j, substantially as and for the pur poses set forth.
