IMPROVED POCKET MATCH-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,249, dated January 28, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL-W. FRANCIS, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pocket Match-Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a iat box, open at one end, with a drawer held in by a spring, and with other mechanical contrivances, by means of which, when the drawer is drawn in by the spring, after it has been drawn half-way out, one
` match is made-to project out of the box, and,
being pulled, is lighted by inside friction.
Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section perpendicular to the first.
A B is a flatbox open at the end B.-
C is a drawer sliding in the box. The metal of the drawer is raised at D D to form a guidepfor spring F.
G G is a slot.
H H is a partition to inclose spring I and sliding piece J.
K is a pin riveted in the box. This pin passes through slot G G, and thus prevents the drawer from being pulled out more than is shown in Fig. 2. This pin is also arest for spring F, the other end of which abutsagainst the edge L of the drawer.
M is another pin fastened in the box.
At N the edge of the drawer is cut away to leave a free passage for the matches.
To iill the box with matches, it is held in the left hand, the opening N being upward, and the matches are pushed in through said opening one after the other, the friction material being irst, until the box is filled.
To use the box, it is held in the left hand, the side O M being downward. The drawer is seized with the other hand and pulled out as far as possible. Then let go. The pulling out brings the end of the lowest match over pin M, and when the drawer is let go and brought home by the spring F the lowest match, being prevented from receding by pin F, is left proj ectinghalf-way out through the opening N. This match is then taken hold of and pulled entirely out, with the care of pressing it sidewise against the rough surface inside of the case. By this means it comes out lighted.
The object of springI and slide J is to provent the match from falling out when the box is carried.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentfrom the United States, is-
The combination and arrangement of the box A B, the drawer C, the springs F and I, and stopper M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
