GEORGE E. CliOlV, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,747, dated November 24, 1896.
Application filed February 17, 1896. Serial No. 579,583. (No model.)
'[o (i-ZZ whom ft may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CLOW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boxes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction which will be fully described in this specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention illustrated in the drawings presented hercwith, of which- Figure l is a perspective view of the box in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective with the il rawcr partly withdrawn. Fig. 8 is ahorizontal vertical section in line 3 3 of Fig. -i. Fig. i is a central vertical section through the box, and Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section in line o 5 of Fig. i.
In the views, A represent-s the casing of the box, coniposed of five sides and open at one end, through which the drawer l is inserted. The casingis preferably made up of two pieces of metal, the sides a., end a', and lower portion a? beingstamped up of one piece of metal. The top A' is bent downward near its side edges and end to form the portions (L3 di a* and iittcd inside of the sides (t and end a'. The edges of these side pieces are bent over the top, as seen in Figs. l and 5 at (L5, which secures the two portions AA' together. The ends of the side pieces c are cianiped about the ends of the side pieces a* di, as seen at (LG, Fig. 3, to prevent the portion A' from being withdrawn from the portion A.
The drawer is made of a sheet of metal and. has its edges bent npward to form lthe sides h and end pieces li' @2. The end piece 112 is prcfcrably bent back npon itseif, as seen in Fig 2, to form a smooth finish, and the bottom preferably corrugated at 113, upon which to strike matches, if the box is int-ended for a match-box.
The drawer B is somewhat shorter than the casing A, and to the end piece h' is secured a spring C, the free end of which extends backward and downward against the bottom edge di. (See Fig. -l-.) The upper portion A' is sta-mped downward at Ag to form a catch or stop which prer'onts the drawer from being withdrawn, except ai' certain times. The end piece b' of the same is somewhat narrower than the end piece 232, and the upper edges of the side pieces slant from one to the other. The spring O holds the drawer up against the top of the casing, so that the end piece b' is in engagement with the catch Az. I have shown the sides of the drawer stamped out at bi, which strike against the inturned edges on of the casing and prevent the drawer from accidentally dropping out of the same. It may, however, be entirely withdrawn therefrom by pulling it sufficicntly to spring the sides a. slightly apart.
wWhen it is desired to unlock the drawcr, the bottom of the casing is struck against something, causing the drawer to drop down below the catch Ag, and the spring O immediately throws the drawer ontward until the sides b4 strike against the inturned edges of.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a suitable casing, of a drawer sliding therein, the sides of which are narrower at the inner end, acatch in the casing, and a spring adapted to hold said drawer in engagement with the catch, except when the box is j arred, when said drawer will fall below the catch, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the portion A, having the upturned sides, a, and end piece, a', of the upper portion, A', having the downturned sides, (L2, (L3, the sides (t, and end a', being bent over the portion A', and the drawer, B, sliding therein and provided with a suitable looking device; substantially as described.
The combination with a suitable casing open at one end, of a drawer sliding therein, a catch in said casing, a spring adapted to hold the rear end of the drawer in engagement with said catch and adapted to throwsaid drawer outward when released from the catch, the inturned edges, (L6, and stops hi, adapted to strike said inturned edges and prevent theV drawer from being wholly withdrawn; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand this 10th day of February, A. D. 1896.
