PATENT OFFICE.
ARON FRIEDMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED MATCH-SAFE AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 771,977, dated October 11, 1904. Application filed July 16, 1904. Serial No. 216,805. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARoN FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Safe and Cigar-Cutter, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, suflicient to enable those skilled in the art to understand, make, and use the same.
This invention relates to a match-safe designed to be carried in the pocket; and the object of the invention is toobtain a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter which will be sightly in appearance, not bulky, economical in construction, and durable.
In the drawings referred to, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter embodying this invention with the doors or covers thereof closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter embodying this invention with the doors of covers thereof open. Fig. 3 is a front or edge elevation of the combined match-safe and cigar-cutter illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the knife of the cutter of the device is formed up. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the door or cover of the match-safe end of the device is formed up. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the spring forming the front edge of the device and yieldingly holding the door or cover of the match-safe thereof and the cutter in a determined position is formed up, and Fig. 7 is a perspective of the spring of the device. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank from which the sides and back of the match-safe are formed up.
A reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout the several figures of the drawings wherever the same appears.
A is the blank from which the sides and back of the device are formed up.
a a are broken lines on which blank A isv bent, at a being the sides, and a the back, of the combined match-safe and cigar-cutter.
B B are beads in sides a a. The beads B B in the end of sides a a adjacent to the cut ter of the device are used to hold the partition D, forming the botom of the match-safe, and the beads B B at the other end of the sides a a are there placed to give a symmetrical appearance to the device.
1 C C are holes in sides a a, in which the end of a cigar designed to be cut is inserted.
D D are holes in blank A, in which the ends 6 e of spring E are inserted and riveted when the several parts of the device are assembled. Spring E is made of sheet metal, as steel or hard brass, and the ends 6 e of the wings a e are bent up on lines indicated by broken lines 6 6 F is a blank bent up on lines ff to form the cutter of the device, and f f are holes in blank F, through which a pin or rivet G extends to hold the cutter in place when the several parts of the device are assembled.
The cutter of the device turns on pin Gr when operated, and g is the cutting edge thereof, which moves adjacent to one of the sides a over hole C to cut the end of a cigar off when so operated.
H is the blank from which the cover or door of the match-safe of the device is formed up, and it h are the lines on which such blank is formed up to obtain the flies or wings h it, in which are placed holes k to receive pin G, on which such cover turns.
When the parts are assembled, the blank F, formed up to obtain the cutter g, and the cover obtained from blank H are yieldingly held in a closed position by the spring F when closed and in an open position when opened. The bottom D is slid into place in beads B B before the pins or wires G G and ends a e of spring E are inserted in the respective holes therefor and riveted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter the combination of a shell consisting of sides and a back formed up of sheet metal, such sides provided with heads and one of such sides provided with a hole adapted to receive the end of a cigar, a bottom to the match-safe, consisting of a plate slid into the beads in the sides, a cover formed up from sheet metal and pivotally attached to the sides, a cutter formed up from sheet metal, and pivotally attached to the sides, and a spring front consisting of sheet metal formed up and attached midway of its ends to the sides; substantially as described.
2. In a combined match-safe and cigar-cutter the combination of a shell consisting of sides and a back formed up of sheet metal, a partition secured in place between the ends of the sides, a spring front, such spring consisting of sheet metal secured between its ends to the sides, a cover pivotally attached to the sides near one end of the sides and a cutter pivotally attached to such sides near the other end thereof, such cover, cutter and spring related so that the cover and the cutter are respectively held in a determined open position and in a determined closed position by the spring; substantially as described.
ARON FRIEDMAN.
