HOOK. No. 322,484. Patented July 21, 1885. a

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALFRED B. ROBINSON, OF LEBANON, MISSOURI.
LHOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,484, dated July 21, 1885.
' Application filed April 27, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED B. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Laclede and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks provided with Drop-Rings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-,
tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of harness-hooks provided with pivoted or swinging rings to take the place of the ordinary spring used in snap-hooks. The object, therefore, of the invention is to provide an elastic cushion fort-he free end of the ring to rest upon to prevent it from swinging up and down; also, a shoulder is formed on the hook to act as a stop to prevent the ring from going too far forward, these objects being attained by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which rep resent a perspective view of my invention, A is the hook, provided with the usual loop, B, to which the rein, trace, strap, or other portion of a harness is attached. The loop '13 connects with the hook A by forked arms a, thus giving strength to that portion of the device where it is most needed and preventing the liability of its being twisted or bent, as the arms act as stays for the loop. Instead of bending the extremity of the hook to form an eye by which to attach the ring, and using a spring to retain the ring in a closed position,
I form a perforation, 1), some distance in the rear of the point a, in whichis inserted the ring 0.
On a line under the ring 0 a seat, (I, is formed,
in which is placed and suitably secured a wedge-shaped elastic cushion, D. The lower portion of the ring 0 bears against the face of the cushion D, and prevents the ring from swinging up anddown, but admits of its being readily brought to the position shown in dotted lines for disconnecting the hook from its fastenings. A shoulder, 6, acts as a stop for the ring 0 to prevent it going too far for ward.
A hook constructed as above described is both simple and durable, and greatly expedites and facilitates the putting on and removing harness. It can be made of any desirable size, either ornamental or plain, as found desirable.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a harness-hook, the combination, with the pivoted ring thereof, of an elastic cushion inserted in the shank of the hook to form a seat for the ring when in a closed position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. A harness provided with a pivoted ring, an elastic cushion inserted in the shank of the hook for the ring to rest upon, and a shoulder to act as a stop therefor, substantially as and l for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED B. ROBINSON.
